Leash training.

Any tips for leash training? My male pup is 14 weeks old. I have a collar on him. I have a rope leash that I put on him. He wouldnt move at first, but now he moves around somewhat with the leash. But if I grab the other end of the leash, he stops. I leave the leash loose around his neck, and loose between me and him. I never pull or tug at him. Sometimes I can get him moving while he is dragging it, and I pick it up while we are walking. But once he sees me holding it he stops and sits. I figure he will just have to get used to it, but I just wanted to make sure Im not doing anything wrong. Thanks Bret

Our pup Dexter had this problem for a couple weeks when we first brought him home. He would get to the end of our driveway and plop is butt down and not move. I think it was more of a fear of getting away from the house. We ended up picking him up and carrying him down to the end of our road, then he would gladly walk back. After a week or two, he would still be somewhat apprehensive, but could be coaxed in to walking away from the house with treats. We would also treat him regularly during the walk to make him more comfortable with it. I have since read that it may not be a good idea to pick up your talk and carry it on walks as it may induce lazy walking, but we never had an issue with that

Thanks for the reply. I dont think its fear of being away for the house, but who knows. We have a couple acres of land and he will come with us to the far end of the yard no problem without the leash. He will pretty much follow us anywhere so far without the leash. But he just gets irritated(?) with the leash.

maybe try leaving the leash attached to him all day, well as long as there is supervision. dont want him getting hung up on stuff. if its on him all the time for a day or two, im sure he will get used to it. just let him drag it around

my puppy was doing this exact same thing. He'd walk nicely to the end of the driveway, and then sit and refuse to move forward. What helped us was that I brought along one of his favorite toys, and made a fun game out of getting him to walk with me. After a few days, we don't need the toy anymore. I keep it happy and fun, about going out for our walk.
