Need Help - Phenobarbital

Scout started phenobarbital on Monday 11/16 at 7 pm. On Wednesday 11/18 she started having accidents in her crate. As it turns out, frequent urination is a side effect of the drug. In just 12 hours, she's had 2 accidents in the house, and numerous accidents in her crate and has received 4 baths. I'm don't know if I can take this! I bought a durable puppy absorbant pad but it turns out it wasn't durable - she ate part of it - hope she doesn't get some kind of blockage now too. Anyone have ideas on what to do? I also bought a crate pad to absorb the urine but I'm afraid she'll eat this too. Need some way to keep her clean! I didn't give her the pill this moring.

What is the dosage that your dog is getting and how old is the dog.

My female CBR has been on Pheno since last summer. She is getting 1/2 of a 1mg pill twice daily and I have not noticed any change in her urination though she is 7 years old. Talk to your vet about this. I did not know that it was a side effect of the drug.

How about doggy diapers with sanitary panty liners?

Call and ask the vet if you can reduce the dosage and if that will help with the side effect.

Hopefully this is something that subsides after time on the meds. See what the vet says about that.

I have little experience with Pheno but I would call and see if you can reduce the dosage and see if that helps.

You can ask about Potassium Bromide, it works for seizures and is actually safer than Phenobarb. I had my one lab on it and helped with seizures but one side effect is that they seem to be always hungry.

The other thing is to remember when starting a new medication and when there are side effects like your dog is peeing those can resolve in a few weeks sometimes. Might just cut back on how much she's allowed to drink.

My previous lab was on phenobarb several years but did not have a problem with frequent urination - maybe it is just an adjustment phase and will get better once the drug stabilizes in her system - I do know it is important not to skip doses so I would not recommend skipping anymore.

I remember when Lola started on pheno, she was a mess.

It will get better. But it may get worse before it gets better.

My main concern was the weakness in her hind legs.

Thanks. Doctor said to give her 1/2 a pill one time a day and we can build up from there so she can get used to it.
