New England dock diving

Maggie has started dock diving at our home off of our dock! She loves it, and we would love to get her involved in this sport. Living in Maine, we are having trouble finding anything near us. We would be willing to travel around New England. Does anything know of anything in New England?

New England is tough I think. I know Ultimate Air goes to NY a couple of times. I have friends in CT and MA who travel to jump.

Dock Dogs too goes to NY but other than that I am not sure. You would have to check their website.

This is a lot of fun isn't it! I hope you find something close to you.

There are some in Canada (Ontario) too.

I've been looking around NE as well without any luck. I've got 2 boys that would probably be interested in it - they jump into the pool to get the toys that I toss. At the least, I'd love to go and watch an event.

I'd love to get diesel into this, but he won't jump into the pool off the deck he will walk onto the raft which is same height as deck then jump in. Any tips?

Remove the raft. Place the object of desire with in "reasonable" reach and lots and lots of encouragement. It is all about confidence. I think some dogs have this thing about thinking their head will go under. It usually does but once they realize it is no big deal they catch on quick. If you are in the pool (be careful) stand out 10 feet and encourage the dog, try to be further than they will jump you REALLY do no want them to land on you. Once the idea is reached put a highly desired floating toy, tennis balls are great but can be hard for a dog to see in clear water, about 6-7 feet away from the dog. Far enough he must jump but close enough it is not a pipe dream. Most first time handlers (present company included ) wing the toy out 20+ feet thinking Fido will get it. The dog looks at you like "yeah right...you get it". Make it easy and rewarding.

Good luck. Don't get frustrated the dogs feel that big time. Give it time. The more time you take at the beginning, the better it will become later.

I'm very interested

Maybe we could start a New England chapter, we're down here in Plymouth Ma.

NE Dock Dogs???

My pup Qajaq is only 3 months old, just learning how to retrieve in the water and he loves it. Just a matter of time before he launches himself off our dock, can't wait.

We just recently started Dixie Dock Dogs down here in Georgia. It's great!! We're already planning on bringing a DockDogs event to Georgia.

Check your PM for some more info on starting a club.

I'd be definately interested. I'm in RI (in the middle of the state closest to the water).

For our "jumping", the side of the pool our deck is on only gives them 15' across and I have taught them to stay away from the sides. If I had thought about it, I could have had something put up on the end where they'd have 30' in length.

I saw your post one DockDogs. It is Christen you emailed? She is great about giving you all the help and support and advice you need. You might want to ask around....maybe put out flyers? Ask with vets offices, doggie day cares, kennels, trainers, pet stores....any place that is dog-related. Try to drum up some interest.

Also, do you have a place to practice? Best case scenario would be more than one place to practice. That way, members could go practice at the closest place to them.

Also, go in those forum for all the other DockDog clubs. Spend some time reading their posts. You'll get a lot of good ideas from them. And don't hesitate to post in any of their forum to ask questions. You'll find the DockDog community is a very helpful, friendly bunch. Everyone wants to help everyone else.

Good luck. It's lot of work to get a club going and keep it going and successful. But if you can pull it off, it is a BLAST!!!!!!

This is great news. I wonder about the New England chapter. Why reinvent the wheel so to speak? If it's not active, then maybe we could get it going again?
