New guy getting a prison pup.

Hello all, My name is Martin. My girlfriend has been wanting to get a dog for a while. Growing up she had a lab mix that she loved. Growing up I had german shepards that I trained very well and loved deeply. For valentines day I decided to get a lab for my girlfriend. I found one in a county humane society that was being fostered at the near by prison. At the prison the inmates train the dog basic commands to make them "more adoptable". Well after I brought the idea to my girlfriend she was thrilled and quickly did the application. After an intense screening process we were approved. The land lord and I went and did a "meet and great" with the dog (my gf couldn't make it due to work). Since the dog will be my girlfriends she has to sign the adoption papers. (it is easier to buy a gun in this state than save a dog from a shelter). The dog is great walked on a leash well no pulling, sat, stayed, layed down, came and rolled over. I was very surprised he listened to my commands after just meeting me. Very happy dog he wasn't skiddish. We go this saturday (2/13) to finish paper work and pick him up. He was found as a stray severly under weight. The lady at the shelter said he whines and barks when left alone. Hopefully we can help him with his separation issues. I'm sure I will be using this forum a lot for advice so thanks in advance.

My girlfreind adopted a prison dog about ten years ago. It was a rottweiler nefoundland mix and it was one of the sweetest dogs I have ever came across. Unfortunately we had to put him down a month ago but she said the next dog she adopts will be another prison dog for sure. Good luck to you and enjoy your new addition.

Congratulations. Hello and welcome.
Talk about a win, win, win situation. You win, the prisoner wins being in a very good program and most of all your new furkid is the biggest winner.
Can't wait to see pictures.

Hello and welcome!

Congrats on your new pup!!!

I've seen some shows on the prison dogs...what a great program for all involved!!
Some of the prisoners actually loved the work they were doing so much, that they were planning on making a career of it when they got out!!
I think it's a wonderful program!

My former hairdresser had a Greyhound from the prison system. He couldn't say enough about how well behaved she was. My guess is you will have a wonderful experience and open a spot up for another endangered dog. You are also lucky to have a landlord that is willing to help. Congratulations!

Welcome to the board. Thank you for rescuing this dog! I've seen stories on the dogs raised in prisons and they always have very good outcomes. Please keep us posted and make sure to post pictures next week!

Welcome from another Ohioan.

I looked into getting a dog from the prison program around here. It's a pretty neat program.

If you don't mind me asking, what prison? Where are you in OHio?
