Nutro vs. Diamond
I have (somewhere along the way) heard that Diamond is a good dog food. Right now Maggie is eating LB Nutro NC, but I think after this bag is gone that I will start switching her to adult food. I looked at the price of Diamind and can hardly believe the difference. I guess that I should do a comparison of ingredients and check it out, but I was just wondering if there were any thoughts on the Diamond food? She is still a little flaky with the Nutro, although she is nice and shiny...
Any thoughts/suggestions?

That is exactly what I did, Nutro LB Pup (and I also had flaking) and then I switched to Diamond Lamb and Rice. If you have a costco nearby, they carry a food called Kirkland, made by Diamond, which is virtually identical to the Diamond Lamb and Rice.
There is another diamond product I would consider if I wanted to feed a chicken based food, and that is the premium edge line. It is a little pricer, but the chicken formula does not contain any wheat or corn. If I had to make a wild guess as to what caused the flaking, I would guess the Nutro (which does not have a balance of omega 6 and omega 3)s or the wheat in the LB Pup formula. Regardless. I think Nutro is great for alot of dogs, and maybe my house was just too dry and that contributed too. Once I started on the Diamond, the flakes went away. |

Personally, I like the Diamond company FAR FAR more than I like the Nutro company. First off, Nutro has lied to their customers about ingredient changes in their foods. Second, I feel Nutro isn't that great of a food. If you check out the ingredients, most of the foods are so much made up of rice that it makes me question how much meat is really in the food. Nutro is merely an alright food in my eyes. A lot of dogs do do very well on this food but I still don't like the company one bit.
Some of the Diamond feeds may not look all that great, but for the most part I feel Diamond has some excellent foods. Two of my dogs are fed Diamond Premium Adult. A lot of people feel the ingredients in this isn't all that great, but when you have two dogs and that is the ONLY food they'll readily eat and do so awesome on, you won't feel bad about feeding the food for a second. Plus, the price is awesome. Diamond's Premium Edge line is great too, but its a lot harder to find in my experience. |

I am fortunate in that a couple of places near me carry Premium Edge. I forgot Diamond makes "chicken soup" also, and while Cooper has not tried it, my cat is using it and loves it.....I had had her on a Nutro weight management formula for years, and she didnt lose a pound, in fact gained, and was disgustingly flakey. On this new stuff she is doing great.
The one store owner who carries Nutro and Diamond (not a chain store), tells me that Diamond does not have the middlemen in the picture, and that helps keep their costs down significantly. I have noticed PetSupplyPlus carries a few Diamond and Professional products (professiional is also made by Diamond)....but they do not pay for the choice space and they do not carry the whole line and all sizes. Nutro PAYS for their space in the big stores, as does Iams, Eukanuba and Science Diet. suzie |

Thank you all for your help. I think that once this bag of Nutro is gone we will try the Diamond. It is considerably cheaper than Nutro. Maggie has a beautiful coat on Nutro, but she did on Iams as well. The flaking is still there and that is the part that bothers me. I am wondering if the shiny coat is actually from so much of the other stuff that I give her (like salmon).
Again, thanks a bunch and I won't be detered by the low price! I just need to remember that more expensive doesn't always mean better. |

I will not feed or recommend Nutro ever again. They lied to me too many times. Plus I asked for puppy kits for my pups back in December. They just came yesterday. Sheesh. I tossed them in the trash and I am done with them.

You guys were talking about Kirkland food being made by Diamond..
Around here Kirkland is the name of Cosco's brand, Is this the same, because I have heard of people buying Cosco food and I always assumed it was not a very quality food, but it sounds like I may be wrong.

Yep one and the same! If you check out the ingredients on the bag (or here http://woodhavenlabs.com/dogfoods.html at the bottom of the page), you will see the ingredient list is pretty compelling.

I started feeding Kirkland after being fed up with Innova. http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/feeding2.html
I felt horribly guilty even thinking of feeding it. I literally looked around the store and prayed nobody recognized me as I dashed up to the cash registers with the bag of food in my cart. That guilt lasted 2 days. That's when all the crap I had seen with the Innova went away and the dogs started doing well again. Don't be sucked in by the price of a dog food. Its what the food does with your dog which is important and if its cheaper then that's a bonus. |

Thanks for all the information about dog foods. On the advice of a breeder, I've been feeding my dog Nutro Natural, but her coat is flaky and her ears are yeasty. Ugh! Also, she doesn't seem to particularly like it. I was going to give Innova a try, but after all the raves about Diamond, I think I'll try it instead. Any idea where I can find it in the Atlanta, GA area? I'm not a member of Costco.

I believe if you go to the Diamond Pet Food web page, there is a place to email and inquire. Other foods made by Diamond are Premium Edge, Nutra, and Kirkland. Good luck!

So here is my quandry...
My vet told me to keep Maggie on Large Breed puppy food until she is a year old. Diamond doesn't appear to make a Large Breed puppy food. Should I switch her to an adult food or keep her on the Nutro large breed puppy until January? |

How old is miss Maggy? Cooper went off pup food at about 7 months, and I have seen many others recommend that. BUT....my boy was a ROBUST boy! (euphemism for he who could get fat).
I definitely don't buy into LB food for adults! suzie |
