Oh No Where to Start!!

I am supposed to start feeding Herb-B wet food for his allergies and his weight; I know he isn't a Lab BUT the brand that the vet recommended Merrick's has some pretty terrible reviews. I am not sure where to start looking for a good wet food for him since the vet would have been my first go to????????????????????????? Any help at all sure would be appreciated. I know that every one has their own opinion about food so I would love to hear about the wet food that you have felt good about.

I generally switched between the California Natural, EVO, or Wellness 95% canned. I've also fed the Purina canned foods - the girls love them all!

I'm not sure which one would be best for his weight, but definitely for allergies, I would consider one of the Wellness Core.

Turkey, Chicken, Cod Fish and Herring are the top ingredients...

It is also likely reasonabley priced..

I was re-reading the ingrediants on Kirkland canned food and they're pretty good.

Where have you read these "pretty terrible" reviews of Merrick canned food?

I mix the dry kibble I feed with Merrick Southern Comfort & Merrick Wing-a-ling for my picky eater Setter all the time. They both have pressure cooked whole chicken thighs and/or wings in them, bones included, and the Setter I give the canned food too eats with a lot more gusto if the Merrick canned is added to his kibble.

Merrick has some pretty terrible reviews??? I would be interested in knowing where you are reading those "terrible" reviews. I know plenty of people that are and have fed Merrick products with great success. I have used their products over the years with different Labs I have owned. While I wouldn't call them the absolute best on the market, I also wouldn't label Merrick as "terrible". As a matter of fact, some of their products are pretty darn good and better than alot of products that are suggested in this forum. At the very least, they are not manufactured by Diamond!

The reviews I read were only what I found from searching this forum -- I have not used the food so I don't have any personal experience. I know that these are only peoples opinions of course but what I have found doing rescue work at least is that once you have heard enough people say negative things sometimes your brain gets pre-disposed. It is possible (and maybe probable) that the food is of good quality????? I know that food is tricky because everyone likes what they use the best (if that makes sense), by all means if there are people who use Merricks and like it I would like to hear those opinions as well.

Of course now I am seeing that there are good reviews of it as well. It was so tough trying to find food for everybody that they would eat and that seemed to do well for them (Chihuahua's can be picky) it just seems a bit overwhelming having to find something new.

I think evangers makes an excellent canned food. They have large cans, hand packed specialty meals and small 100% cans. The 100% cans are 6 ounces and kind of expensive. The bigger cans or specialty meals or both would probably be what you would be interested in if you were to go with evangers. They have a large variety....some are complete meals. Evangers is a very good company in my opinion. My dog loved this food. He would not touch anything else until I started feeding him raw for a topper instead of canned.

Maxwell actually likes Evanger's handpacked canned foods... as a matter of fact, these are the ONLY canned foods he will eat. He's picky about it, though... won't eat it straight out of the can, it needs to be warmed up first.

I am a fan of Evanger's... smells good, looks good and the ingredients are great.

All I have to say is just know that no matter what food you look at you will have people who rave about it and people who hate it. Also, there is no one magical food out there, so research food in general then make your choice on what you feel is best for your dogs.

I have had 2 chihuahua's, neither one was picky at all, they'll eat anything that hits the floor.

I have found they both have done the best on a lamb-based diet.

My current one requires pretty high protein/fat in order to keep weight on, he's a skinny guy.

That is so funny because out of my three only Hooper will eat anything - literally anything, I think he thinks he is a lab, LOL!

Maybe since Henry Ford and Herb-B were both adopted as seniors?? Henry Ford is the pickiest eater ever and Herb-B is very choosy as well. I have found with Herb-B that it is more of a size and texture thing I think that makes him turn his nose up at food. Also Henry Ford is very thin and we have to keep weight on him where as Herb-B is fat and he have to be careful to keep weight off of him .

I know every dog is different I was just wondering about people's experiences with quality of food. We have never fed wet food before (except for the rare treat or upset tummy) so this is a whole new learning experience.
