Overweight dog.... What dog food to try?
Help! My Suzie is overweight. She is 95 lbs and growing. It's mostly my fault, I admit. I give in to her at the table when she looks at me with those big brown eyes. She just loves to eat. She currently eats Eukanuba adult and I need to switch her to a diet food. Or do something..... I have cut down on her treats and table feeding. Any other suggestions, other than stop being such a sucker to those big brown eyes? Thanks.

If you are going to give her extras then you have to cut back on the amount of kibble she gets. The same with treats. You don't need to go to a lite diet often that does not satisfy the nutrient value of young dogs. How old is she? How about cutting back on treats, the extras no table food (unless it is part of her meal), more exercise and maybe a touch less in her bowl. Some have great success with adding canned greenbeans no salt with the kibble it helps to give the bulk but no fat.

Thanks Labracorn
Thanks for the advice. Suzie will be 4 this month. She really started gaining about a year ago. Thing is I've always fed her tidbits from the table..... a piece of chicken, a bite of beef. I know it has been a bad habit. Now I just have to break her from expecting this.
As far as exercise.... she gets tons of that. I am a stay at home mom and take her out several times throughout the day (about 3 times). When we are out it is for at least an hour at a time. She loves playing ball and running about. I'm thinking that we may need to start a walking routine as well. I will try the green beans. I don't know that I've tried feeding her any of those yet. Knowing her, she will probably eat them. I was curious about the diet food. From what you said about the nutrients I don't like that idea. So, thanks again for your suggestions. |

I do not have my pup yet (6 more weeks to wait) so I obviously do not have an overweight dog...but I did have a fat cat!!! We switched him to Iams Weight Control and that has really slimmed him down. I am sure they have a dog formula too!!!!

I had problems with any of the weight formulas for my cat, there was not enough fat in it, and her coat/skin became bad. I would think the dog formulas would run the same risk. If Coop were to need to lose weight, I would first try to cut down on his quantity and supplement him with green beans so that he thinks he is more full.

I have a year old female and she was 80 lbs. a month ago. My vet recommended RD diet dry food so I started her on that. She gets 2 cups daily (1 AM, 1 PM) and thanks to this site I have been putting green beans or pumpkin with it. We took her for a weigh in on May 29th and she was down to 75lbs. !!! RD is not a permanent food for her - just to get her weight off and then we are switching to Diamond/Kirkland lamb & rice. I have heard lots of good things about this food from here. Good luck and try baby carrots for treats instead of cookies - Abbie loves 'em! I have learned so much from this board
