My 2 yr old female Maizey is well trained for waterfowl hunting, incl taking hand signals etc. I have used Water Dog for her and my previous two labs. I have not hunted pheasants with them but now want to try it. Maizey is very bold for a female and I am afraid she will be hard to keep within gun range in the big fields of SD.
What is the best bet for pre-hunt training to keep her out in front and flushing but not out of range? thanks...hwb |

I'm a real neophyte when it comes to training hunting dogs but until today (KS season opener) my almost 11 month pup had only been duck & dove hunting & on our "nature" walks. When he was young I taught whistle recall with a clicker & also whistle sit - I didn't realize until today when hunting with 12 people, 3-4 dogs in the field how well he responded to these commands & how useful they were.
Today he hunted pretty much one man to the left & one to the right, seemed pretty natural to him & whistle commands kept him close when needed. It's so ingrained in him you'd swear as quick as he turns I would have hit him with an ecollar. |

A hunting Buddie had me get a bumper , and some Pheasant wings from Cabela's , and wrap them around the bumper with white medical tape.. You then toss the bumper into brush..letting the dog hunt it up....and retrieve it ....
Then when you go hunting and say hunt it up...he associates that with finding the Pheasant.... Working with live birds is the best....and there is a good book by Tom Dokken's in print this Year...Retriever Training ..You can't get a better book for the $$...

i just bought the dokken book about a week ago. Am about 35 pages in and like it alright so far. It doesnt seem to go in to incredible detail about the processes but gives a good overview and has plenty of pictures. The detail may get greater in the later parts of the books, but in the puppy part, im glad i have been going to puppy pre school to get detailed lessons.
