I drive a kia sportage 2009 which has plenty of room although I haven't tried to put a crate in it yet. Well, I tried but I need to buy one that is built for SUVs. It has the same amount of room as any small sized SUV like the Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4 only difference is that is 10k less! I got the kia jn 2010 and paid it off by 2011 and that's what I like the most about it it's highly rated by consumer reports. also, it has AWD which you need in winters around here. It serves me well. But I heard the newer Sportages (2010 and on) have less room.

I used to drive a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee, loved it, 2 labs fit comfortably in the backseat with their seatbelts on, and still had the rear area for "stuff". Drove it till it wasn't economical to repair any longer (12 years or so). Then thanks to the generousity of friends selling it to me and holding the loan, a 4 year old Kia Rio, 2001. It had air conditioning, but the backseat couldn't hardly fit one lab. although about 4 months after getting the vehicle, 1 dog died, then the other one a few months later. It got to the point that it was wearing out.

So 3 years ago (gosh, already???) got a well-used 2005 Dodge Durango. Its got the 5.7L Hemi in it, and has all the goodies including the navigation. Its got more than enough room, the 3rd row seats are normally folded and covered with one of those fitted floor mats. 2nd row has an "impermiable" seat cover on it, Scout has loads of room to be belted into the middle seat belt. The rear floor isn't entirely flat, but a 2x4 laid on its side would likely make it flat if I chose to put a crate in the rear. It would easily hold 2 crates, plus room at the sides for folded soft crates or chairs etc, leaving the middle row seats for humans. It gets HORRIBLE fuel mileage, but its very very very comfortable to drive and see out of, and most importantly, it can tow almost anything. It doesn't make sense for me to have a separate towing vehicle and an everyday driving vehicle, so I ride the motorcycle in the nice weather when I don't have Scout with me. Apparently from 2007 onwards there was a fuel-saving option available on the Hemi that increases your mileage. I would love to be able to afford a 2009 year one just like mine, they didn't make them in 2010, and they are totally changed now starting in 2011, they can't tow nearly the same weight.
