Honda Odyssey with 3rd seat down and one of the middle seats removed. My dogs are 115, 120, and 140 lbs (Newfoundland). They get in and out through sliding rear door which is fairly low to the ground and I think easier on their joints. The rear of my car has a permanent black, yellow and red fur lining which was an after market modification.

We have both a Jeep Liberty (2011) and just got a new Dodge Grand Caravan (2014) to replace our old one. If it's just Chloe, I can either have her ride in the cargo area of the Liberty or fit a crate back there, but it is way too high for Mulder to get into even with a ramp. Even Chloe needs a boost (she puts her front paws up and I hoist her rear). Besides, they don't make the Liberty anymore, so that's probably irrelevant.

For dogs, we mostly use the mini-van, with the 3rd seats folded and 2 crates in the back with room for some gear as well. I have two kids as well (ages 14 and 11) so don't want to drive anything that requires the back seats being folded down on a regular basis. Was hoping to avoid getting another mini-van, but have to admit it fits the bill.

For what it's worth, I drove the 2015 Jeep Cherokee for a few days recently while one of our cars was in the shop and LOVED it .... except for the cargo area as you can no longer fit a crate back there (you could with the original Cherokee - we had a 1994 one for years). If I didn't care about the crate, and only had one dog or no kids, I would have been tempted by it.

I've got a 2012 Toyota RAV4. Nice car overall, and it had a major redesign in 2013. I've been using a seat hammock in the back seat, bust now that Bruce is bigger than Sophie, it's getting a bit small for them. I've been looking for a double crate to fit in the back, but so far nothing that I like, or if I like it, the price is way too high. I've got a year left on the lease, and I'm looking at a few different cars/small suvs. Honda CRV, A couple of the Subaru's, Mazda CX5, Hyundai Sante Fe Sport. Maybe the Jeep Cherokee, but I'm pretty leery of Chrysler products.

Toyota FJ Cruiser... It will handle three large dogs easily. A (2'Wx3'Lx2'H) crate fits perfectly in the back with the back seats still available. It will take your dogs anywhere they care to go.

I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Bought it last March, very happy with it. My back seats are folded down all the time and I use an old quilt and one of those seat hammock covers that attaches around the front seat headrest's to attempt to keep the mess down. I vacuum it every weekend.......

I just took this pic an hour ago after a hike in the desert. It's nice to be able to open the back hatch with the key fob from a distance. My dogs will just run up and jump in before I get there.

Barry, if the Rav4 is too small the Cherokee will be worse. The Cherokee has just about the least cargo room in it's class. My new car is the Cherokee after 20 years driving a '93 then an '03 Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee now is huge, way, way bigger than my first one was, but it might have the room you want.

I drive a 2013 Nissan Frontier CrewCab Pro-4X. King cab I had previously was just not big enough in the back. Opie has plenty of room with the cc though.

Yeah, I was checking one out in a parking lot today, and it looked a bit smaller that the RAV4. I doubt I'd really every buy one, as I've had such bad luck with Chrysler products over the years. I swore after the last one it was only Toyota's or Honda's. All of the ones I've had have been bullet proof. I like the Subaru's, we drove a couple when we were car shopping for DW a few years back, but that flat motor has this weird vibration I just couldn't stand. If they still have it, they are off the list.

I'd love another Toyota Tundra, I had three over the years, but when I stopped racing motorcycles a couple years ago, I just didn't need a truck, and the 14MPG was horrible. I'm pretty sure it will come down to the RAV4 or CRV again. Will just depend on which one is the best deal.

The 2015 Subaru Outback just got a nice review in the Toronto Star. You could get a 6 cylinder in it and stay away from the CVT 4 which has a possible class action lawsuit looming about excessive and engine destroying oil consumption. We looked at it but it's just about as long as the Grand Cherokee, though it doesn't look it. And it also has a low back door clearance. A friend of ours just got the Rav4, better mileage and more room inside than I'm getting but not as good clearance and not a real 4x4.

We have a total of 4 vehicles but two of them are out of commission for the time being. The one I drive, when I can, is a 1997 Jeep Wrangler, not a lot of room if the back seat is in, definitely not enough room for a crate (but works just fine for us, as most of the time it's just me and Shadow). With the back seat taken out, it works well for our two dogs, one 85 lb black lab and a 45 lb Shepherd mix. However with them in it, there's no room for anything else back there. The second is a 2011 Peterbilt 368, my husband's big rig, plenty of room for everything, not practical for everyday shopping though ;-) Then we have a, non working, 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 lifted and with 17" rims and big beefy tires, not good for dogs to jump in if they have hip issues, but will carry everything in it. Then a non working 1993 Dodge Dakota that is just an extended cab, it's been out for over 10 years, but hubby is working on putting a new engine in it. The bed is small, so we wouldn't be able to haul too much in it.

My mother-in-law has a 2002 Ford Explorer that she keeps the two back rows of seats down most of the time and there is more then enough room for 3 dogs (I say 3 because she has a miniature Australian Shepherd) luggage and crates, and tons of doggie toys too. I'm anti-Ford but the Explorer is pretty good for clearance, space, and ease of getting in and out our smaller dog who has hip issues gets in and out of it very easy.
