If you are not familiar with the Wet Canvas website you should check it out. They have a forum for colored pencils and you might find some good tips there! It is how I taught myself...

You can get a few supplies at craft stores but I purchase most of mine online. It does take a little time to do, the bears took me a total of about 4-5 hours but I am getting faster as I learn...
