Mouthing when excited 10 month old

Gigi gets very mouthy when she getget excited .sometimes she grabs a toy and chews it so hard but even with that, her mouth so big she grabs.

She does this to me and wife , neighbours visit with kids, or my kids friends are here.i can tell she is excited and happy while doing this.

How do I work with her.
We say no
Redirect to a toy which she chews and still nicks
Use lavender oil which she backs her off .just the sight of the bottle.


Yesterday I came home sick and she was in the crate and when I tried to lay down on the couch to keep an eye on the Christmas tree ornaments .she got real mouthy and tried to sit on my head.

It's cold and I am fighting a bug so walks are down to 1 coupe of mile one every night . I am booting her to day care as I need rest.she is full of energy . Even though they are a small day care .she will have a few play time in a big room with other dogs .

One thing that's worked for me in a couple of instances of behaviour I don't want is to make them keep the behaviour going past when they want to stop on their own. For mouthing I push my hand further into the mouth and keep it there. If the dog is mouthing hard you could get hurt so try advisedly. Mine never tried to bite hard but still, teeth can scrape you up a bit. Worked though.

Thanks ,I have done that a few times . Nothing seems to faze her. I know she is not a pure breed and can have some genetic disposition.
It's like she is on full drive mode.

Strange she will not do these with the kids .obviously she trying and kids crying when she's small has turned her to avoid it...weird .

Anthony's as purebred as they come and he's been mouthy since a pup. At 10mo they're entering the terrible 2's and their exercise needs increase in our experience. So could be a combination of things.

Yeah- 10 months is a time when they usually need more outlets for their energy, so if you're sick (life happens!), I'd chalk it up to a collision of unfortunate events. I'd be more worried if you'd increased Gigi's exercise- mental and physical- and she was still being extra-mouthy.

Asked he day care , if she is mouthy and Steve the main guy said only to him to get his attention or in play but non of the girls . So just being selective I think it is not total behaviour but selective .

She starts training adult dog 1 so I will see.right now my 5 yr old and she are playing and jumping and rolling on her bed and toys and strangely she does not any mouthing what so ever .... but she was mothy with me and my wife.

Brooks is a high drive get it at all cost retriever, much more so than any of the Labs I've had before. He will "give" me something and then leap wildly to re-aquire his prize. I will treat him for an immediate "give", and give him a sharp correction when he fails to do this. If he lunges at the object, I give him an immediate "sit", and will walk around with his object of desire. If he moves, correction, if not, I'll pitch the item for retrieve.

He's quickly learning that the retrieve is the reward (thanks IRISHWHISTLER) and I dictate how things go.

I have a different way of thinking, I suppose. Stick a bigger toy in her mouth so she cannot nick you. Maybe play tug so she is not jumping on you and also she would be gripping the toy. Being happy and excited and probably doing this for about ten months now, I would not expect the dog is even aware that she is doing it at this point so if you corrected her, it is likely she wouldn't know why.

My dogs just go and grab things when I come home from work and they are excited and they want to use their mouths, but they know not to use their mouths on me. They are Labradors, after all, and they are mouthy. I do not want my dogs to correct my dogs for being excited to see me. I like that they are excited to see me! So, they can be excited and they can use their mouths, but they'll just use their mouths on something else. I taught them this by ignoring them, shove toy in their mouth and as soon as they had a toy, I'd shower them with affection. Toy comes out, I go quiet and still, shove toy in mouth, rinse and repeat. It did not take long at all to train it. My last Lab was taught this way and he greeted me with a toy in his mouth for 16 years.

Make sure exercise needs are being met as well as mental stimulation.

Tickle is 18 months and when we come home from work, she is so excited to see us, she wants our hand in her mouth. Jagger is 3 and does the same thing. We discourage it when it's happening but I have no belief that it will ever stop. And it really doesn't bother me. I know what it is, and they only do it with family.

Quick question. We have never given her any bully sticks , bones or antler ,raw hide or anything with the fear of getting belly upset .
Should I consider these. She has a few chew toys.i will order a few more stoday.

I did get her a big Petco ball that fills her whole mouth which obviously helps alot

IMO, dog NEED to chew. It's a huge stress relief. Plus it cleans their teeth. We give ours white knuckle bones, USA made rawhide, raw marrow bones. The ONLY time ours get some tummy troubles is when they break off pieces of the raw marrow bones and swallow them.

I am really have not idea what to use here.The platic looking bone the doc asked us not to give.

can some one suggest a healthy chewing stuff and also where to get them.How do you know its good quality.

btw, i never had a dog that never gets tangled and even tangled untangles itself before. she is a smart dog and i wonder if she is messing with me all the time. She even picks gloves and hats i drop on the walks and gives it to me when i am doing the get the plastic bag and pick the poop dance...must be a lab smart thing. surprises me every time.

I use the following on a very regular basis. Bully sticks. Yak milk chews. Cow hooves. Raw marrow bones (scoop out the marrow, very rich) . Bully horns (Brooks loves these, Sophie, not so much). Elk antlers. Retriever rolls (Digesteze or only made in America). Stiffed Kongs.

As Jen said, dogs need to chew for a variety of reasons. I try to make sure they get something to chew daily. Makes them happy and helps my sanity.

I also recommend any of the Zogoflex line of dog toys, they are firm, but have some give to them and my dogs LOVE them

Lark is very mouthy as well. If she can't quickly find a toy to carry around, she'll try to take our hands or pick at the hems or edges of our clothing. If she has something in her mouth it avoids her trying to pick at us but she will poke us with the toy repeatedly, too. She's nearly 4 years old and I don't see that changing. I'm just glad she learned to pick up a toy when she's excited. I usually end up with a pile of them on the counter by the back door because she brings them to the door when I let them out.

Mine both love gnawing on knuckle bones but Chase has chipped off all the tips of his canine teeth on something so I don't give them anymore. Likewise marrow bones. I get the super thick retriever rolls from Wholesome Hide and they both get a chewing session after breakfast which lasts 15-30 minutes, depending upon how much rawhide they chew off. Neither of mine are interested in antlers- some dogs seem to like them better than others. They're expensive so if you want to try them, get one and see how it goes. I wouldn't order a larger amount until you know if your dog likes them. Lark is the more enthusiastic chewer and will chew Zogoflex toys, Nylabones which I guess is similar to the type your vet discourages. I don't usually give ears, snouts, horns, bully sticks, yak milk sticks or the like because mine go through them so fast, plus bully sticks smell bad to me. It can be hard to find something that works for your dog. Good luck to you, it takes some trial and error to find what works best in my experience.

Anthony is such a wackadoodle that we have to monitor everything he chews which is a good rule of thumb anyway. Stella can be trusted but doesn't know when to give it up. So we look to USA sourced material, Wholesome Rawhide is made in the US and we get Happy Dog of Cape Cod antler splits. We just tried a Zogoflex toy and it appears to be holding up. We also fill our kongs with peanut butter and that occupies them too.

Update
We play fetch in the morning in the cold
she gets some training.
I do the same with a walk thrown in the evening.
supervised bones for 30 minutes a day and some bully sticks.


the biggest help seem to be bones/bully sticks. i ordered a few from chewy.com and gigi has never been a tug player as she will let you take anything from her mouth without a fight. so when you tug she will let it go and sit.
she will never use her bite force either. I think we let her chew on a bone and give her bully sticks now and this is changing her. also we think the mouthing is reduced due the chewing she does on the bones.
she wants to play tug now . i will buy her a good tug toy the big rope thing i got from petco got shredded in 2 days. She seems to have discovered the power in her mouth weird.
