Spleen Removal
Hello All,
I have 2 labs Daisy almost 11 and Coco 5. Daisy was vomiting the other day so we made an emergency trip to the Animal Er. After ultrasound and x rays they found a very large mass on her spleen. There were no other growths or spots detected on her through X-rays, her blood work is good and overall health is solid as she is a slower than the 5 year old but does very well playing and getting around. I am looking for anyone who may have had a LAB that has gone through this surgery. I know she is an older girl but outside of this issue she is very healthy and we would like her to have a few years of enjoying her golden years. Please share any experiences you have in relating to this surgery and recovery.

What did the vet suggest? In cases like this spleen removal is a way to go, especially if she is otherwise healthy, and then the spleen is sent for biopsy. Both benign and cancerous tumors can rupture and cause internal bleeding. Removal of the spleen if the growth is cancerous will buy you some more time with her.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yes....a mass on the spleen can be either benign or malignant like Berna said.
But either one can rupture and the dog will bleed out.
I would go with your Vet's recommendation on this. Best of luck to you and your Labby.

No experience with this situation. Wanted to send along good thoughts and prayers.

No experience here either--just wanted to add my wishes that Daisy will do well, and will be with you for many more years......

The user here going by SoSiouxMe had a splenectomy on their dog. See page 2 of this thread. You may want to send a PM asking if they'll share more info with you about it.

Best of luck with your girl, I'll keep a look out for an update.

Thanks for the well wishes. Daisy had surgery on Monday and stayed the night at the vets. They removed a 9.5lb tumor and her spleen. Surgery took almost 4 hours and the vet was awesome in communicating after it was done. Daisy came home Tuesday and although is taking a bunch of pills is doning better than I expected. She is eating a bland diet and drinking well. She is peeing good but no number 2s to report yet. Vet said could be 2-3 days. I hope to share her progress every couple of days so that maybe someone else will use the information if they find themselves in this situation. We will be waiting for a few days on her follow up appt and finger crossed the biopsy results are benign

Thanks for letting us know, issues with the spleen are something many of us worry about. I'll keep an eye out for further updates. I hope Daisy continues to recover well.

Fingers, toes and paws crossed that the tumor is benign. Looking forward to further updates. Good thoughts and mojo for Daisy's recovery.
