I had no idea DW and I were so good with duck calls!
DW and I took Brooks out to do some field training this evening. Brooks had done several marks of about 50 yards. I moved our start spot back about ten yards and gave a call, as I did this I noticed a single Mallard Drake fly overhead. DW gives her call, tosses the bumper, I send Brooks, he retrieves it back to hand. Very nice. We move back another 10 yards or so, and just about when I'm going to call, I see the duck land in the same spot the bumpers were landing. I had Brooks on a 100' long line as his recall hasn't been exactly spot on lately, but I wasn't holding it. I had just told him mark about the same time. Before I could react, he see's the duck, and takes off. I called him, but it was useless, and in the time to took me to react, I couldn't grab the long line. Brooks is hauling a$$ at the duck, I'm running as fast as I can, which isn't all that fast. DW is running toward Brooks and the duck. About now the duck is 50' in the air heading away, Brooks goes over a small rise and I can't see him. I give 3 quick toots on the whistle hoping for the best. Well, don't you know about 3 seconds later Brooks comes hauling ass back over the rise, right past DW, straight to me. From maybe 100 yards away. I guess all that training has worked out after all!!!!!
I can only think that duck was called in by the skilled calling exhibited by DW and myself!!!!:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
