Chutes is 8 weeks old this week and my husband just noticed our first flea (not on the pup, but on him). He has a vet appointment on the 22nd where we were going to ask all sorts of questions, including recommendations for these types of treatments but 1. we'd like to hear from some people other than the vet trying to push their brand to make money 2. seems like it's time to get started.
What do y'all use? Breeder recommended Tri-Heart Plus for heart worms, etc. But what about fleas/ticks?
Not sure where you are but I'm in PA. I tries Frontline and it was useless. The ticks grew immune to it in this area. I switched ti K9 Advatix II and that seems to be working. Haven't found a tick yet.

I use nexgard. It's in a convenient pill form and has been very effective for me. Downside is that it's expensive and relatively new (untested). When using frontline you have to kee your dog dry and that is very inconvenient for me in the summer months.

I use nexgard, too. My dogs hate topicals and love heartgard (chewable), so I have settled for this.
dont use, but im in desert....havent seen a bug other than ants in years...really.
Our general vet does not push foods or products although they will provide prescription foods and meds. If asked, they will opine but they don't bring up brands unless asked. The only vet I've gone to with these 2 who really pushed a certain brand of food was the orthopedic vet who wanted me to switch to Science Diet. Thank you for your suggestion *ignore*
I'm on the east coast where fleas, ticks, mosquitos are plentiful. Our vet is currently giving Heartguard and Frontline Plus although they do carry other brands. I don't really debate what brand is the best with the vets, the meds are working for us and that's what is important to me. I'm sure if I asked to switch to a different brand they'd serve it up if they have it. Since both of the ones we use are dosed according to weight, when they were puppies our vet would give a single dose or 2 month supply of each until they got into their final weight categories. That didn't really take too long, by 5-6 months both were in the 51-100 pound dose range for the Heartguard and the 45-88 lb weight range for the Frontline. So, whatever brand you decide on, see if they'll give it to you in 1-2 month amounts until Chutes is within the final weight range for the meds.
Like Smartrock, I also use Heartgard plus and Frontline plus. I am very pleased with their efficacy and will keep using them.
Thanks for all your recommendations, y'all! Was looking at Nexgard but wasn't sure... guess we'll probably give that a try. We called the vet and they carry both the treatments we wanted to use but they won't sell it to us without an exam on file, which I do understand and can appreciate. So, I guess we'll just wait until then anyway. Haha.

We just did the Vet visit for fleas and this time he recommended Bravecto which is a 3 month pill. It doesn't treat heart worm so if you are already using Tri Heart then you won't duplicate heart worm meds with Bravecto. It is a semi soft chew that we were able to cut into smaller pieces and hide in peanut butter for our picky eaters. Our Vet said some of the older products were loosing their effectiveness and that Bravecto was relatively new.
We use revolution. It is a topical as Hemi has trouble taking the pills. It handles Heartworms, Fleas and Ticks.
