Has anyone relocated with kids ?. Share some experience.

As the topic says.i have a 7 and 10 yr old. I in July took a job which was suppose to have some travel to Catskills of ny . But in 4 months I seem to have not gotten then even once. So I just work from home.

I live in new england and this has sparked the thought of a move. By next spring I will know the long term status of this job. If it works out.

I am thinking of moving. Any thoughts from.people who have done this appreciated. Me and the wife would like a little less winter, great achools and affordable housing in the 400s.

You can still get a nice home in Reno for 400K. You'd probably pay about $2000/yr. in property taxes. Nevada has no income tax. You get to keep more of what you earn.

There are some really good schools here in our part of town, but you have to research your school districts carefully before you buy.

We have 4 seasons. We are far enough north that we can get plenty cold in the winter. But winter doesn't last as long. (I still have some silly shasta daisies blooming in my flower beds!) During winter there are lots of nearby ski slopes and they have junior skier programs. But below (in the "basin") in Reno, you don't get a lot of snow. It all gets dumped in the mountains. We've had freak blizzards... but even then, the snow melts after the cold fronts move on.

Spring is glorious.

Summers... you're in the "high desert" (elevation between 4500 and 5000 feet above sea level.) It can get hot. Triple digits. But then as evening rolls in, the temperature plunges. It's not unusual to have a 40 degree temperature swing. So that means your mornings and early afternoons are very pleasant. We are NOT Las Vegas. We're 450 miles north.

Reno has casinos... but it increasingly it's being taken over by high tech companies. That may be related to the exploding costs of living and working in the Bay Area (San Francisco is 150 miles west of us.) We're a college town. The University of Nevada - Reno is a growing research institution with a Medical School.

The state capital is Carson City and it's a 40 minute drive to the South. Our sister city is Sparks, NV and like St. Paul and Minneapolis, you can't tell when you're leaving one and entering the other.

I think Reno is a great choice for a growing family.

North Carolina is a nice state to live in. We lived in the area known as "The Triangle" for several years, so Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill. That area is nice weather-wise, winters are not usually bad. A few hours to the east, you're at the ocean, a few hours west, you're in the mountains. In the area there are some great universities, UNC-CH and all the various UNC campuses, Duke, NC State and some well-regarded smaller colleges. (You've gotta look ahead for those kiddos, you know) Because of the local universities and tech businesses in the research triangle, the area is reasonably diverse. Good health care, music and arts, nice life style. I'd live there again.

Been to reno. I must have added i might still be asked to go to ny. Its newburg ,ny airport. I see a direct flight from charleston. NC is in too as the best motorcycle destination are there .

Live in the "Triangle" for several years and it's beautiful weather and beautiful country. Worked at UNC School of Medicine. There is so much to do in that area, so many opportunities. Actually lived in Hillsborough which is quite close and being outside of Chapel Hill, house prices are much more reasonable. By close I mean maybe 30 minutes tops.

My sister and her husband recently moved from Washington DC (our hometown) to Cary, NC which is in "The Triangle" solely because they wanted to find a place they could afford to buy a home, had job opportunities, and was a pleasant place to live (they didn't know anyone there, it was only for financial and longterm reasons they chose NC). Having visited several times now I have to say I love it, and they bought their 4 bedroom house in a really great neighborhood for ~290k I believe.

What are the best motorcycle destinations? I know they do host Bike Week in the Outer Banks but I don't know of other popular places.

Blue ridge parkway, smokie mountains and area is a motorcycle destination.i am the few motorcycle guys who loves to ride and not the social aspect. The tail of the dragon etc I have taken a few motorcycle oriented vacation before kids will be weekend rides. I have not returned there as taking a week off to ride is not a dad thing .

I went to the smokie mountains area for 5 yrs in a row in early 2000 and it's a international motorcycle destination . The local area commerce has turned it into a disney for motorcycles . I am in disney now with kids in 80s and tomorrow home in 50s...Yuck .

So we have sort of decided Myrtle Beach. I grew up on a beach in India and want to be close to one.
The houses seem reasonable.
The school rating is nice .
Diversity is important as I am brown and my wife is white .

It is close enough to find a job if needed with some travel in the future if rhe need arises. Plus with kids getting a bit older the wife said she can work .

Most of what I do for a living is moving steady to remote with travel.

We might rent a vacation spot for June end to july end and spend a month . Woh wifi I can work from the place and they can experience the new location. We will take gigi and our cat with us.

No kids, but wanted to add one of my requirements when looking to relocate years ago...it needed to be close enough to a major airport. At the time my parents were getting older and I wanted to be able to get home within a half a day if necessary. Even for pleasure and work trips, being near a major airport has advantages. I don't have a several hour drive to the airport and don't have to deal with a ton of connections.

My next relocation, if all goes as planned, will be when I retire and I still have the requirement to be near a major airport for traveling convenience.

Ive never been to Myrtle Beach so don't know if what I said is valid for there but wanted to give you something to consider in your research.
