I have read that the meds purchased online or at stores is somehow "different", not as effective, etc. as the meds carried at the vet's office. I'd like to hear opinions on this, and if anyone has experienced this. Thanks.

When I used to use TopSpot, I always bought online. (usually through Entirely Pets)
IMO -- I think it's a gimmick. You can get a lot of generic medication like ivermectin and other wormers different places online for low prices, they work the same. You kind of have to decide what's important for you....you can pay your vet, pay the full price and IF the medication doesn't work for some reason, the pharmaceutical company usually repays you (like if the dog gets HW when on a brand name HW medication bought from the vet). Or you can buy generic Heartguard or something similar and accept the risk. I typically go for the latter.
I guess if you can buy the same medicine locally or online for what the vet would sell you anyway and at a better price, I'd go with the online stuff. I looked at the Frontline Plus package I got from the vet's office, and the ingredient list and amount is the same as on those shown on Petco, 1-800-petmeds and Chewy, so why not shop around for the best price?
my vet a retard with rx...but I have received a couple purchases for heartguard saving a few dollars by buying at walmart...I miss my old vet...could do everything online with old vet in small town...move to big city and get shitty service imo.
My vet does everything they can to keep costs down for us, so I tend to want to support them by buying the meds through them. Not sure I would if they had a different attitude towards customer service.
Where are these stores getting their product from? Because it definitely isn’t the Veterinary distributors that the clinics buy from.
Online store like Petshed.com offer generic brands and they ship from non-US locations. I've never had problems with them, when we were using them.
I was told by our rescue director if you purchase frontline, heartgurd etc to make sure the paperwork is in the box from the manufacture. That was a way to tell the good meds from the counterfeit stuff.
I purchase from my vet when I can when they went to a different heart med/ flea stuff combined I went to fosters and smith. They have no problem with me buying else where.
