Do you wash flannel before making it into a garment or count on the size up to shrink down? It seems to me that it will be more difficult to work with after it's washed but I'm an amateur so know very little and my next class is Tuesday.

Definitely wash before sewing. Depending on the flannel quality, you may also benefit from ironing it instead of just drying.
Agree with Sundance
The only thing I do in addition to what Sundance recommended is to do a long basting machine stitch on the raw edges. Decreases the fray factor dramatically.
I did a zigzag seam on the edges of my denim and canvas totes. Is that what you're talking about?Quote:

Depending what you are making and the quality of the flannel I might not sew the edges at all, zig zag or straight. I haven't found flannel to fray very badly in, say, a pair of pajamas. At most, for me, a double seam would suffice.
