5 month old with OCD

Our boy, Jake, had been limping for a bit, so we took him to the vet for xrays and he was diagnosed with Osteochondrosis (OCD) in his front left shoulder. We discussed some options and I am looking for some more information. Has anyone had a dog with OCD? He is on pain meds now and glucosamine and we are restricting his activity- so difficult being that he is a 5 month old lab?? He only tends to limp some at night, so it has not gotten bad. I just wanted to hear from someone that has experienced this before? What did you do? Thanks!

Hopefully Woofie will see your post. She has a girl who had surgery on her shoulder and I believe she had OCD as well. We have more pups with elbow issues than shoulder, but I'm sure others will chime in. The pup who had the shoulder surgery is doing well as far as I know.

Was this diagnosed by your general vet or an orthopedic specialist? If you haven't had your pup seen by an ortho specialist, you may want to do that to confirm the diagnosis and get recommendations for treatment.

General vet diagnosed it.

An ortho visit is definitely in order. Be careful with meds if they are NSAID's, they can often lead to really upset tummy and other issues. So sorry you are dealing with this, sending good thoughts for your baby.

Definitely ask for a referral to an ortho vet. Vets are great at general stuff but if your vet hasn't done specific studies in orthopaedics than you need to get a second opinion from a professional. Same as with humans, you see your doctor for general stuff but he isn't a specialist in EVERYTHING, which is why he refers you to specialist.
