Question for LP parents

In the last week Buddy's evening anxiety has worsened.
I give him a calming supplement around 4-5, then 7-8 he
gets a gabapentin.

This has worked well until like i said the last week or so.
He paces, and pants and doesnt know what he wants.
I offer if he is upstairs, to go downstairs. sometimes he
does sometimes he doesnt. He seriously just does not know
what he wants.

I am thinking this is his dementia advancing, or maybe he is
in pain and needs an increase in his meds.
I have never seen anyone else mention anxiety with their LP
dogs.

I am thrilled he made it to 13, and would love to see him make
it to 14, but only if he is happy and healthy...........

No anxiety with Hudler, but if he's awake, he's panting and sometimes he does a low quiet constant whine. Sometimes it's potty, sometimes it's I'm hungry, sometimes it's he wants to go to sleep on his bed and wants to be escorted. Before he got sick, he would do some loud yelping when we were upstairs in the kitchen for dinner. Maybe it was because we were home and he wanted us downstairs, maybe he wanted to be up in the kitchen (where things fall off the counter into his mouth), we never really know for sure. He can't go up stairs, and I am not walking him around the house so he can be upstairs in the kitchen.

We've stopped giving him the meloxicam, I notice no difference in any levels of pain. I don't know if he is in pain. The last xray we did, I forgot to mention, he did have some confirmed spondylosis in his spine.

We found he sleeps better with light on, so at night, depending on where he decides to go to sleep, if it's not in my bedroom, we leave a light on for him.

It's all a guessing game. Especially when they aren't completely well, but aren't really "sick"...like Maddy was really sick.

So hard with dementia involved. You don't know if there is pain involved or what is going on. Can't think of any additional advice that Jen did not already mention.

This is heartbreaking...

Just curious...is dementia one of the affects of LP? I have a good friend who has a 12 year old Lab that has been diagnosed with LP (early stages) and he has become much more clingy...and needy. He sometimes seems to be confused as to where his owner is. He sometimes will start barking for her...and she will be right there in front of him? And then she will go over and calm him down. He also pants...but usually it is more prevalent at night. She also leaves a small light on for him at night.

Yes..I do believe dogs with LP have anxiety..It is always best to try to keep them as cool and calm as possible.

Have you consulted with your Vet? I know LP is very common in senior Labs...why..I don't know.

My heart breaks for you...and I hope you can get something to help him relax and feel better....

Would an anti anxiety med be appropriate? Such a heartbreaking situation, my heart breaks for you and Buddy. Sending good thoughts.

Amy doesn't have LP but does a lot of laps in the house and outside. I wonder if it's dementia and when talking to our vet I seem to remember Xanax meany ironed. She doesn't seem to be too bad so I didn't pursue but it might be an option.

When our Sebastian (Golden Retriever some of you may remember) was in his last couple years, he would get a bit lost in the house and sometimes get "stuck" in a corner and we'd have to help him find his way out.
