How to Properly Fit A Prong??

I've read plenty of threads about prongs here and the one constant in ALL, is "make sure they are fitted properly." Can someone explain how to do that?? Is 19 weeks too young?

Thanks all

This link has good photos on how to fit the collar -
http://********.com/fit-prong.htm

Melo is approaching an age when he can benefit from it. But I'd wait a few more weeks. Both my boys were over 5 months old and probably closer to 6 months when I started working with them.

IMO it depends on the pup. I've been using a small prong collar with my pup Obi for the past month or so - I probably started it around the 4 month old mark. But he's a pup who is not "sensitive". Some pups are sensitive and require only light corrections. Some are not as sensitive and require heavier ones. Obi is the type that requires heavier corrections - he handles the prong no problem. You have to know your dog to know what's right for him/her.

That website was "disallowed" a long time ago.

A prong should fit snugly, up high on the neck under the ears. The prongs should be "standing" on the neck with the chain section at the top (your corrections are a bit different than with a choke collar). You should not be able to slip fingers under it.

Everyone always says "that's too tight" when they see it on properly, but you barely need any correction that way.

IMHO, 19 weeks is too young. A prong collar is a training tool for problems. You should start out training on a flat collar and only use tools if you need them. It is NOT a starter collar, and if you don't know how to use a choke collar, please don't put a prong on your dog.

You can't type in the name of that site because it's "banned". Quite some time ago someone from that site came over here and did things that are considered inappropriate, like using two IDs so he could ask himself training questions and respond to them by directing people to that site. He also was rude about other people's advice, in affect saying that the ONE and ONLY way to train was the methods used there. It was an offensive form of SPAM and Woody blocked the poster and banned the site.

This question belongs in the training forum, battmain has a thread with pictures on "how to fit a prong".

i've used the choke and he will literally choke himself something serious..and won't even stop pulling at times...i feel like it's hurting him, which is what i DON'T want to happen....i wasn't running for a prong, but am definitely keeping options open if his pulling gets out of hand...bc regardless of corrections, he is pulling MORE now...he is currently using a flat collar, bc i didn't like the choker...he pulled so hard on it at times that his SKIN WAS RED around his NECK!!! totally upset me, so took it off and never put it back on...

I was taught that the chain section should lie flat on the back of the neck without straining but without any slack to it.

I know that everyone has their own thoughts about prongs and training collars, I just personally feel...uncomfortable, I guess is the word, when I hear people wanting to use a prong on a puppy. Now if this was a full-grown dog you just adopted, I could go for it a little easier, but since he's a puppy, you've "taught" him how to pull and now you're going to correct him for something you've allowed him to learn.

Any luck finding a class or trainer? It really is a better idea to have someone who is experienced show you how to train Melo and use the appropriate training collar when necessary.
