Can i get some conformation that the photo is correct??

Daisy was fitted for her prong collar at the pet store and it sits on her neck the same way as the actual picture(not the drawings). there doesn't seem to be any problem.

now i'm confused...

No need to be confused. The simple answer is...If it works, don't fix it. There are dogs out there where the collar will not stay high on the neck. In those situations, as long as it is fitted tight enough to have an effect without hitting the stops, then you are fine. The majority of folks that claim the prong doesn't work, do not have it fitted properly. Due to different sizes of the necks, it is possible that they may have to go to a smaller sized unit. On the large collar, one or two links too loose can render the collar useless.

the photo of the doberman is correct. it works better if its high on the neck. AND it needs to be snug. if works if its lower down, not as well, but also needs to be snug.

battmain is right, some dogs have necks where the collar just slips down no matter what. what i do is adjust it so thats its snug high up where its supposed to be and hold the leash very short just above her neck. almost holding the collar itself. this keeps the collar high up and the leash very vertical. then its a very small movement to deliver a correction. a flip of the wrist in fact.

Exclamation

The dobe photo is incorrect. There's no reason to have it up that high except temporarily for extreme circumstances.

Mid neck is where it belongs.

the prong collar is probably the misunderstood collar around. i have one boy, who can not have a collar around his neck, where all other collars rest. but this he can.because it rests not on his espohagus.
if you google prong collars and read, you will get a real education.

eh....well, 18 weeks might be a tad young. You might wanna wait a month or two. Unless he's on the larger side and is able to drag you down the street, i'd stick with a regular choker until he gets a little bigger. IMO.

few things on the prong. Make sure that you alway's diconnnect the link and than re-connect the link after you place it around the neck. Do not slip the closed prong colar over the head of the dog. It is possible if the dog moves the head you may possibly catch the dog in the eye. There is a dead ring and live ring on the colar. I hook both live and dead ring to the lead works fine for Scooter. Some may just use the one ring and that will tighten up the prong colar around the neck and release. Prong colar as in most colars for lead walking should be snug up high on the dogs neck back behind the ears. Better response cause of the muscle's in the lower part of the neck.Very strong muscles and up higher more sensative.Don't abuse the training tools, but do possitive training along with your tool bag for great results. Takes time, patients, and above all make it fun.

Control collars

I do not use any type of control collar on my dogs until after the age of 6 months. I have my pups wear a choke chain at all times to have them used to the feeling of it but they have a flat leather collar as well used for walks and such. A great resource on how to fit a prong collar is >HERE<

The prong collar is meant to produce pain. It is meant to mimic the mother biting a puppy by the neck when it's practicing inappropriate behaviour. But it is not meant to injure the dog. Corrections are put on a scale of 1-10. 1 is a weak nag, and 10 is yanking the dog off its feet. You have to correct to the level of obedience you're getting from your dog. Some dogs like my border collie need less than level 1 and even then she rolls over and submits, it's just that she is a very soft dog with weak nerves. My Lab (Nash) ignores a correction at level 3 or 4 as he's a very hard headed dog and has very strong nerves and a dominant streak in him.

The most important thing to remember when correcting your dog is that one good correction is much better than 100 nagging corrections.

check out the "Easy Walk Harness" I love it...i used it prior to using a pinch on my pup. 6 months is the prime time to use it...they do have "training pinches" all it is...is a plastic pinch..it looks exactly like a flat collar only plastic.

Another big thing ive seen in these posts. If your dog is pulling....teach them to heel. My 8 month old is on a pinch and it doesnt hurt him, he doesnt pull me because 95% of the time he is in a heel...if he breaks the heel thats where the correction comes from. Also mid neck is NOT where the pinch should be it needs to be high on the neck. And dont be afraid to correct...if all you do..is little tiny corrections you are really going no where. like i saw someone else write a few big corrections is more effective then 100 little ones. Best advise speak with a trainer. I think its a great training tool...but its amazing how many people have started hating me because i use an "evil tool" . Funny part is...i can trust my dog in a down/stay (place) and walk away....can they? The thing i like about them is with using that in combination of treats and praise for what they do right...you will have a dog doing the behaviors you want sooo quickly...vs a dog that you only use treats and praise...with the behaviors still not being quite so exact. I have a service animal...i leaving my life in my dog's paws basically...so i need to make sure he does the correct behaviors everytime. Right now he is in training so i dont do intense training everyday... but i do train everyday. Thats the key, consistensy
