Member of the runny poo club

On Wednesday this week, Bruce has the soft serve ice cream poo's. Took a sample to the vet, it was clear. They recommended 24 hour fast, which we did. Fed small meal yesterday at noon, then at 4pm, a half cup of food at each meal. Fed his normal amount, 1 cup, last night at 10pm, right before bed. He had normal poo at 5pm, 10pm, 3am this morning. He had a half normal, half runny poo at 7am. Runny poo at 8am.

I fed him 3/4 cup food, plus rice and a table spoon of pumkin this morning. His activity level is 100% normal. No new food or treats have been introduced. He's on Royal Canin Maxi Puppy from the breeder. I don't think he's eaten anything strange in the yard or house, as he's under observation at all time. I've got a call into the vet now.

I'm not a big fan of this food, because of the change in formula, but like a lot of people here I do think you should keep them on the breeders food for at least one large bag.

    Any thoughts of suggestions????

Wish I could help, but you are doing the same as I would. Take a sample and go to the Vet. Did the breeder say anything as that would be another call I would make?

Have you had a lot of humidity? That can cause stress on animals as well and could cause bellies to go sour? This was the time of year Jake would eat grass to help balance his belly flora. I know you are watching him like a hawk, so don't think it was anything that he ate that was foreign to him.

Fingers crossed you find a solution for Bruce. Poor boy.

Poor Bruce. I don't have any other suggestions, it sounds like you're doing/have done all of the right things.

I'm thinking the extreme heat we've had in the last few weeks here on the east coast has something to do with it. It seemed like that's when Molly started having issues.

I hope baby Bruce feels better soon!

Poor baby, I hope he is back to normal quickly!

When Maxx was a puppy and started teething he would get "soft serve" poo, off and on. Usually just giving a spoonful of pumpkin would straighten him out, until the next time. His breeder and my vet told me it was not uncommon during teething.

We're hot and humid here too. Archie is having softer poos than his normal. Love scooping them up.

How about a couple of days of boiled chicken or hamburger and boiled rice? Also, a spoonful of pumpkin sometimes helps.

We had a few episodes of diarrhea, more diarrhea than just soft serve, when Lark was between 14-18 weeks old. I hate to fast a puppy that young, so our "fasts" were usually only about 12 hours followed with some boiled chicken and rice, moving up to kibble. We went 3 rounds with this. Two treatments of metronidazole firmed things up while she was on it but within a day or 2 of stopping it, would go right back to diarrhea. Stool samples were checked in house and then sent out with nothing found. By the 3rd round, my vet was starting to suggest changing her food but I figured if she'd been fine on that food for the first 3 months of her life, it probably wasn't the food. That was my assessment anyway. After round 2 the vet gave me tylosin in capsules to use "if needed". When the soft stools/diarrhea came back after the second round of metro and didn't improve with boiled chicken and rice nor boiled ground beef and rice, I started the Tylan. After a few doses, things went back to normal, she went back on the food she had been eating forever (from her standpoint), and the diarrhea never came back. I think the Tylan might have been a 2 week course altogether. We never did figure out what the issue was and I didn't want to complicate matters by switching food when she was so young and I wasn't sure that food was the problem anyway.

She also started getting some probiotics around that time- I used Fortiflora that I ordered from Amazon. The vet didn't suggest it but her breeder had mentioned that there are some probiotic type things people who show dogs use if their dog gets runny stools when there is a show coming up, or maybe something more like Kaopectate. I got some but after the Tylan, there was no need to use it. She doesn't get probiotics these days, I really only gave them for the duration of the 30 dose box and then stopped.

I hope you figure it out for Bruce, I hate having things not go as expected.

Thanks everyone. Yes, it was horribly hot here on Tuesday and Wednesday, almost 100 and miserable humidity. I did speak to my vet, he gave me a course of metronizadol. After talking with him, he thinks the combined stress of the trip here, new surroundings, his 12 week shots this past Monday, and the heat have just messed with the bacteria in his gut, as he is absolutely normal otherwise. He did tell me to stop the pumpkin, as it can also loosen stool in some dogs. So we'll go with the pills and his normal food and see what happens. I'd be a lot more concerned if he was down on energy, not eating, bloody stool, vomiting etc.

Let's cross our paws and hope for the best!!!!

Maybe from drinking different water, too? When people move, some suggest taking some water from the old home along for the dog and ease over to the new water at the new location. I've never had an issue with the water but maybe since he's so young and on top of everything else... I don't know, just throwin' it out there.

Yeah that does make sense if you think about it. He's been here 3 weeks, and maybe drinking from the sprinkler the other day (hose water) is a factor. While I'd love to take a trip to the UK to get some water (and see my daughter and friends!), I don't think it's very practical!!!! LOL!!!
