Antibiotics Finished - Now awful diarrhea!!

My poor Asher can't catch a break. We did a round of antibiotics for a UTI. Stopped on Thurs AM. Friday, stool started out solid but then "cow pie". Saturday, cow pie consistency each time. Today - it's worst than day 2 of his antibiotics. For those 10 days (after day 2), I had to add in rice and chicken to maintain a solid stool. I did 2/3 rice, 1/3 chicken , and I kept in 1 cup of his kibble x2 a day and he did great. Pooped two times a day, sometimes three and it was normal. (prior to treatment, he was up to 3.5-4 cups of kibble a day ). For the duration of the treatment, his stools were just fine. I still haven't gotten him back to his full kibble. Aftr Friday's poop performance, I didn't up the kibble and kept the ratio the same. We go in the morning for urine analysis follow up so I'll certainly see what the vet says. He's supposed to get his 16 week shots but I think I'll reschedule that for later in the week. This is all very frustrating. I just want him happy and healthy. I read an article that diarrhea can get worse upon completion of treatment. I want him back on his kibble so he can get the nutrients he needs. He's lost some weight too. Ugh! Anyone else experience this?

Still full of energy and driving Samson nuts! :-) And on a positive note, the UTI seems to be all clear (I sure hope). No more mishaps with peeing.

Try probiotics. Antibiotics kill he gut bacteria. The probiotics should replenish them and help his poops.

For future reference, my VEt had me give antibiotics with probiotics, but at different times during the day. Pretty powerful ones though, acidopholous that I had to keep refrigerated, but could buy over the counter in the drugstore. Maybe those more powerful ones would help now. Good luck.

I will keep that in mind for any future antibiotics. I'm going to ask the vet to give me something for him because two days of this with him already on a bland diet is a bit much.

Always use probiotics with antibiotics, even for yourself!

I was torn on probiotics. I read articles on a strain that causes uti. I can't think of the long name but it is an ingredient in fortiflori. Other packages didn't break down each probiotic so I didn't buy. I did add yogurt and mashed sweet potato to his food.

Uti is clear and now I have some meds for diarrhea. Soon I'll put this behind us .

I've used this in the past, and windycayon gave me a jar when I picked Brooks up. Works very well.

I used this on the pups when they were younger and would eat something in the yard that disagreed. Haven’t needed it in a while though (knock wood)

We always used chicken and rice for a day to stabilize.

Gigi lover her scoop of yogurt in her bowl everyday . It's natural probiotic .

We are back on track. Meds the vet gave worked for the diarrhea. And you know, the visit was so crazy (Asher loves the vet) that I forgot to ask about probiotics and UTI's. Of course I found the info on Google and resisted purchasing any. I'm sure they are fine but we have had such an uphill several weeks I was afraid to add anything other than the yogurt.

Now we can count down to our Outer Banks vacation over Easter!
