    Puppy with UTI

Dozer has a UTI and has been on antibiotics since Tuesday evening. I have absolutely no experience with a dog having a UTI, let alone a 13 week old puppy who is being potty trained. I know it’s too soon to expect to see an improvement, but I guess I was hopeful.
His urine still smells very metallic (like iron or as my daughter thinks like a rusty pipe). He has been going outside about every 45 minutes while awake, sometimes he will go to the door to ask to be let out and other times I take him out to prevent an accident.... and we haven’t been completely successful today in preventing an accident. I guess I am wondering how the UTI will affect the potty training, will we have to start at square one once the UTI is cured?? Any ideas when I should expect to see any signs of an improvement and when I should be concerned if things don’t seem to be getting better? The metallic smell to his urine, has anyone smelled it with their dog with a UTI?? What causes it??
He is having loose stools now from the antibiotics and I went back to the Vets today to pick up a Probiotic, which we started at supper time.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Aww, sorry to hear! Asher had a UTI at 9 or 10 weeks? Maybe it was 10-12 weeks? Anyway - I was struggling with his potty training overnight. I was getting up every 2-3 hours with him and I was still finding him soaked in urine. I adjusted his last meal of the day to earlier, sought out advice here. Then one day, he was laying on the living room floor on a piece of my exposed hardwood. I happened to look over at him and he pee'd in his sleep. At that point I knew something was wrong. Next day I collected the urine and dropped it off at my vet. Sure enough - UTI. After 24 hours of antibiotics -- he did not pee overnight. On the downside, he got awful diarrhea. I got some probiotics and it helped. Not sure about the metallic smell. I do remember thinking he smelled like puppy urine which to me was strong. So maybe the same?

After a full round of antibiotics our potty training got back on course. There was the slow down since he couldn't help the dribbles or slips. But after that first dose, he never pee'd overnight again. During the day, he would give me no notice that he needed to go. Even to this day, he will sometimes let it go to the point of near panic and then both of us are running out. For whatever reason, this guy does not like the bell.

Our big issue was pee'ing overnight so I knew when that trend stopped, his UTI was better. Also, at the end of the meds, I took another urine sample back in and they gave the all clear. I think once you have that, you can focus more on the corrections of potty training. I cut Asher slack during his round of meds since I wasn't sure if it was him or his UTI.

Best of luck and I hope it clears first round.

Thank you so much for responding and sharing Asher’s experience with me
Dozer has had 3 full days of antibiotics ( Clavaseptin 125mg twice daily for ten days) and at this point I can’t see any improvement... if anything he seems to have less control over his bladder. He used to dribble urine, now it’s more like a flood ... he does this when we ask him to sit before eating (which I am wondering if I should stop until this has cleared), when he gets to the door to go outside as I am racing to get boots on, when he wakes from his sleep overnight ( he sleeps for 7 hours and I am wondering if I should wake him halfway through the night to pee) and he does it if he is excited to greet people. His urine definitely smells like rust or metal, not sure how to explain it.. and now he smells like it as he pees and sits in it trying to be a good boy. We are bathing him daily and he isn’t reprimanded at all for any of this as we know it isn’t something he can control.
I will be taking a sample in to the Vet at the end of the antibiotics, but that seems so long to wait if we don’t see any improvement.
Yesterday was a frustrating day I guess I can say, I was hard on myself for his accidents despite trying my best. He was outside and peed and then about 20 minutes later peed on Cooper’s bed, went out again and peed and 20 minutes later peed on the mat as he waited for me to get my boots on to go out. This morning he peed all over his crate and our floor as my husband got him up to go outside. Any ideas on how to prevent any of this.
Will waking him in the night lead to him always wanting to go out in the night?? I have removed the mat from the doorway, put all of the dog beds out of the room he is in, I have gated him into our kitchen area where there is ceramic tile, he is crated if I leave the room, we go outside every 45 minutes or more if he goes to the door (he will sometimes ring the bell and other times just sit there) I am keeping a pee log so I can hopefully catch some improvement.
on top of this Cooper has Gastritis and just finished meds for that and I feel like I have almost no time to spend with him and I’m feeling guilty about that too We spend time together while the puppy is sleeping, but if Dozer is awake my eyes are on him.
Sorry this is so long, thanks again for all the great advice!!

I've never had antibiotics make a uti worse. Run this by your vet....could easily be that it's not the right antibiotic. You want to get a handle on the uti to keep it from turning into something worse.

So, I checked my post from last year. He was 12 weeks old. Up the UTI diagnosis, I was getting up every 2 hours to let him out. :-) After the antibiotics, I moved that to four hours. During the day, my pet sitter would come in at 4.5 hours (I'm away 9 hours). Pre antiobiotcs, he would pee and she would have to bathe him. If I recall, he had a few accidents during the day while he was on antibiotics because I remember her bathing him and me being worried it would happen at night and that the UTI was not better. Also, I do know when I took in the sample at the end of the antibiotics I was worried he would have to do two more weeks because he was having accidents during the day.

Asher was getting a bath 2-3 times a day. I remember being very stressed over all the peeing and then feeling a sense of relief with the UTI diagnosis. If he's not peeing overnight, I'm not sure I'd wake him up? Since the peeing overnight stopped, I could tell the antibiotics were working. Maybe call your vet and see if you can drop off a sample. Maybe they will be able to see an improvement when compared to the first sample results??

I know what you mean about time with the other pup. It's just me so I have to make certain I make time for Samson. Asher gets so jealous - he moves in on me and Samson. Samson - he will just lay and stare at us like we are doing him wrong. lol

I will see how today goes and if there is no improvement I will call the Vet before they close today and get my hubby to run a urine sample from Dozer in to them in the morning.

I know that look well... I get it from Cooper all of the time.

i can’t imagine how you survived a puppy with a UTI by yourself, I’m overwhelmed and I have help at home.

You give me hope we we will get through this... I guess because we are in the middle of it it feels like it will never end lol. I also felt relief with the UTI diagnosis, at least it explained what was going on, but didn’t anticipate the symptoms to get worse before getting better. Here’s hoping today is a better day!!

Thanks again for sharing your experience

It was super challenging but the little guy was super cute and just so innocent. I went through tons of that Miracle stuff. I mean bottles. And it's like 10 bucks a bottle. I smartened up after about 8 bottles and started using vinegar and water.

Next up for Asher potential surgery for elbow dysplasia. When Samson had his TTA, it was just me and him. I will have my hands full with Samson around for Asher's recovery...if surgery is necessary.

That's what a mom does though!

I hope you can get some relief for your puppy...

I also agree that if you don't see any improvement after an antibiotic, he needs another Vet visit as soon as possible...perhaps he needs further testing.
