I didn't know to separate either and have never had a problem with a dog, not even when we still vaccinated for everything every year. I did have a problem with one cat, prolonged lethargy, and the Vet said to separate the rabies from the others for her so I did from then on and she was fine. But I only separated for her, I still didn't "get it" that I should for all of them, just in case. It took a couple more years but eventually another cat began to react, the same way, prolonged lethargy.

So now every body has theirs separated by a couple of weeks. It's a 20 to 30 minute drive one way to my Vet, not a terrible hardship.

Now I think it's sort of like feeding a dog dark chocolate. Some dogs can actually eat chocolate with no problem. Enough can't, and it can be deadly quickly, that we all know to not chance it and we watch out for chocolate. I think the numbers that have problems with vaccinations all at once is probably smaller than the number who can't eat chocolate but it's a precaution fairly easily taken, why not take it? One way to think of the odds of having a reaction is: your dog will react or your dog won't react. That's only two possible outcomes making the odds 50/50.

Yes, that was likely a vaccine reaction. The problem is of course, that you don't know which one she reacted to if given all together, otherwise, your vet could pretreat her w/ benedryl.

If you know what vaccine brands your vet is using, the simple thing is to look up the label info online. My current combos per label state to be given at 2-4 wk intervals (the one it replaced said 3-4 wks). That applies not only to just combo boosters, but everything else (lepto, rabies whatever..). My lepto vaccs say 3-4 wk intervals. The vets I have spoken to at Merck and Pfizer have told me my 3-4 wk intervals between are really ideal, in their opinions. And they really stressed ONLY vaccinating 100% healthy pups, so if the pup isn't bouncing off the wall (even due to a growth spurt), wait a couple days and re-examine your timing. We only have one shot at puppyhood vaccines the way I look at it, so I want to do it as well as possible. I think too many (vets included) get on a calendar routine and just go with it. I did learn thru all this that my backup vet (further away, but has done all my OFAs and repro lately) won't give more than a 3 way combo at once after the first 2 combos as he says the respiratory stuff is covered by then. He absolutely won't combine lepto or rabies w/ anything. Guess who is going to be my "go to vet" from here on out when at all practical? I have lost respect for the ones working on their schedule of convenience. I want a vet who has my puppies' health first and foremost in their priority.
Thank you for your precious insight and here's a bit more detailed info:
She was given just a rabies shot without any extra medication and she was healthy at that time, so that makes the rabies vaccine the only probable culprit. I really noticed it just the second time and realized she had a very similar reaction to rabies three years earlier. That's what made me do some research on the Net and, to be honest I was shocked to learn that rabies vaccination is pretty drastic and can be even fatal in extreme cases. That's what's made me insist on strictly separated approach with rabies being the one and only shot.

As for the vaccines used (I've kept Lynn's certificate of vaccination just to keep track)
The first rabies shot was Nobivac Rabies with mild reaction and the "head-shaker' three years later was Rabisin Merial.
The combo they usually use is Eurican DHPPI2-L and that one never caused any bad reaction I'm aware of.

I must admit that I was impressed they accepted my opinion and did not argue with me, which makes me like them even better

Remember your vet works for YOU. If you tell the vet you want to wait 3 weeks between vaccines, then YOU are in charge and he/she should respect that. Many vets continue to do things the way they've always done them, not keeping up on new protocols for vaccines. Me personally, I want a vet who is progressive and keeps up on new things (like vaccination protocols and the evidence against early spay/neutering). Also one who respects my opinion and listens to me.

It's been done and now you just keep an eye out to make sure your dog doesn't get sick but in the future, you wait 3 weeks between vaccines and you wait 3 weeks after a dog has been ill or had surgery before you vaccinate.

Someone had to graduate at the bottom of their class and you hope it wasn't your vet.

Amen to everything you say Labby! Yep, vet works for You. Already talked shots with the breeder and will make sure Vet goes that way. Plus am lucky as Vet is the reproduction vet for the breeder.

Learned to be this way from raising rabbits. If you think Vets might not know about dogs, you should see some know NOTHING about rabbits. Lost a rabbit because a Dog vet said he knew rabbits and gave my 15 pound Flemish a shot for a 30 pound dog, realized his mistake, sent a Vet tech and bunny to me and sent us home, only to have to rush back with a dying rabbit. Didn't make it as my Flemish died in my arms on the way.

YOU are the BOSS, Vet works for YOU. Know what you speak of about the shots as they are important and if not given right can hurt your pup.
