    Ate a cardinal

Diggity who weighs 20 pounds just caught and ate a cardinal. Do I need to be worried about it causing an obstruction? Ug!

I would say probably not, but maybe a call to your vet might be good. The feathers and bones are good fiber and the meat is good protein- all natural!!

My vet is closed for the night. I’ll call in the morning. Just wondering if anybody thought it was an emergency.

    I love cardinals. Sniff.

Aw, silly pup. Barley snagged a live gopher when he was 14 weeks old. Looking at my sweet puppy go CRUNCH on a live creature was.... interesting. But then again the gophers around here suck so I'm happy to have a little hunter.

Just think Whole Prey Model. LOL

On a more serious note, he should be just fine, I would watch for straining to have a bowel movement, vomiting, bloody stools etc... but any of that is highly unlikely. Dogs eat raw foods all the time and are just fine, the small bones from a songbird aren't that tough to digest, and the flesh is just some extra protein. As long as the bird was not ill, which is impossible to say now.

The most I would consider doing is worming him, in case the bird had intestinal parasites.

Hershey ate baby bunnies when he was younger. Baffle would lie in wait by a particular bush, waiting for the sparrows to zoom in. Neither dog even chewed...and they were fine.

I agree to watch for straining, but he should be fine. Silly dog.

That's not an obstruction, that's a FREE MEAL.

Poor cardinal, they are such beautiful birds. Jet jumped on a male who was bogged down in deep snow. She didn't catch it but so many of it's feathers came out it couldn't fly. Then WE caught it, made a big cage and kept it on our dining room table for six months, till we could release it. Chirpy sang arias from the world's best known operas to us while he was captive and fools that we are, we never thought to record his songs.

Diggity will be fine, most likely. If he swallowed the bird whole it might bung him up a bit but the poor thing will likely pass without a problem.

When Scully was a puppy she got a hold of a freshly killed bird (cat kill). Not sure what it was, but probably similar in size to a cardinal. she swallowed it whole while dancing away on the end of the leash while I tried to get her so I could get it away from her. Think like the way a snake swallows things ... it was exactly like that. She looked a bit queasy for the next 20 minutes or so but was otherwise fine.

Finally connected with my vet's office and they said he should be fine. And he didn't seem the worse for wear this morning at all. In fact, his poops were pretty good. Guess I'll see how it goes the rest of the day and night.

Thanks for all your reassurance last night / early this morning before I could get ahold of my vet. I was worried because Diggity is so small. I still can't believe he gulped down that whole bird! I didn't think his throat was wide enough!
