Lido had 4 sets of puppy vaccines, including lepto. He goes to boarding on a farm with a pond at least once a month, so I don't want to take any chances. Next year, I'll get him the 3 year rabies, and I'll try to get him the 3 year Dhpp (not widely accepted in my area). He'll also get the kennel cough nasal vaccine every 6 months, even though it has limited effectiveness.

    Rabies only (law).

DHPP and Lepto given last time in 2011 and I haven't revaccinated since.

Rabies are annual (law) and DHPP and Lepto are optional and given every other year (when Cookie was a pup it was given annually too, then they changed it in 2009 to every other year).

My litters get Neopar (Parvo only) at 5wks. This supposedly helps override maternal antibodies for parvo so the pups' immune systems can respond to the vaccines since I live in a fairly hot area for it.

I do Nobivac DHPP (was Progard 5) at ~7.5 wks and 2 more at 3-4 wk intervals. I do a booster 1year later, then pretty much every 3yrs unless I am doing a breeding that may be pushing the envelope... Have not read anywhere that is suggesting not to do the 1yr booster and given I know of some parvo cases recently in 10 mo old "fully vaxed" puppies, I'd personally not skip it around here.

Lepto (Vanguard L-4) is given 3-4 wks after 3rd combo, and again 3-4 wks later. Annual, though timing often gets adjusted somewhat if I have a litter or someone is in season (I do not vax bitches in season, so will wait). My research indicates that the stand alone lepto L-4 is more protective than in combination form. Plus given that I don't do annual combos, it'd not happen here anyhow.

Rabies is given at ~5.5 - 6 mos (no law here saying you have to do earlier so I wait until after teething is done typically). Puppy, 1 yr later, then every 3 yrs per law.

Bordetella is given (IntraTrac III- nasal) pretty much when pup starts getting out and about w/ other dogs and is annual per label.

I decided to hold off on the fourth combo vaccine and instead went to my holistic vet to do a titer test. Both his distemper and parvo came back with plenty of antibodies and the vet said he is totally fine for at least a year and possibly for life. I'll do another titer test in a year.

As for lyme and lepto, she is not a huge advocate of either. Since I already got him the lepto at my regular vet, that is a moot point, but I decided against lyme. I'll do his rabbies a few days prior to his turning 6 months. Not sure what I'll do about lepto next year.

I've been giving him a garlic-based supplement called "Bug Off" from a company called Springtime. It gives him pretty bad garlic breath for about an hour after he eats it! But I am hoping it helps with the ticks. The holistic vet likes that product and uses it on her dog. She says it won't prevent ticks from biting, but it will make him less appealing to the ticks. However, she said if a tick is hungry, they'll bite anything. I have found a few deer ticks on him, but thankfully they are easy to spot since he is so light colored. He gets several "tick checks" after walking in areas where I know there might be ticks, so for now this is my plan.

    Good decision to do titers.

As for the bug-off-garlic, my experience is nothing really works 100% on ticks, so I'd suggest you be careful and at least do a test for Lymes once a year, if it's an issue in your area.

Ticks are seasonal in the US. A great podcast I listen too is "Stuff You Should Know" It is part of the Science Network so their stuff is very well researched and they turn it into a an informative but fun podcast. They cover a wide range of topics, the episode on Ticks was quite fascinating. You can listen to it here Why Ticks Suck | Stuff You Should Know

Anyway, when ticks are active, here in the US Hemi and I use Vetri Repel. I get the wipes because I do not want the spray getting into his eyes. Its all natural essential oils of all the stuff ticks, mosquitoes, black flies really hate. VetriScience Vetri-Repel Flea Tick Wipes, 60 count - Chewy.com

I have been using it since Hemi was a puppy and we go off in the woods camping and so on in spring and summer. I have only found 1 tick on him. It wasn't attached luckily. You do need to reapply after like swimming and so on. I do find one container lasts me the tick season though.

Agreed on the Lyme test once a year. Forgot to mention that that is part of the annual exam we do. Thanks!

Great suggestions, thanks! I listen to podcasts, so I'll check that one out for sure! And I'll definitely look into the wipes you mentioned. Thank you!
