    Vaccines

I’ve mentioned puppy vaccines in several other threads, but wanted to create a new thread specific to the topic. I am curious what you all do for vaccines and when. The vaccine schedule seems to have so many different opinions.

    DHPP
    Leptospirosis
    Kennel cough
    Lyme
    Rabies

I know there are even more...

For me, I am doing DHPP (on the fence about 3 or 4 given the early first one he got - vet says 4, breeder says 3), leptospirosis (did two but unsure if I’ll do next year), kennel cough (done, but only because daycare required it), rabies (will do at 6 months), Lyme (on the fence).

I plan to do titer tests for DHPP next year. Wish I could do titers for all.

DHPP, Yes we do it every year. again because if your daycare requires Kennel cough, you can bet they require this one as well every year. A lot of the events Hemi goes to and training facilities require this and ask for this record. I would do it the vet recommended 4. Your not going to hurt anything other than your pocket book. This will ensure you are protected. These are bad diseases to get and easily transmitted.
Lepto, yes every year, Hemi does a lot of swimming, it can be found in the water around here. We go to farms and outdoors where squirrels, rodents etc. So yeah could be a problem for Hemi.
Kennel cough, yes every year. Again it is required by places Hemi goes.
Lyme, we do not get this one. It is really not as big of a deal here, it is very very rare. Unfortunately though as climate change and ticks spread I have considered it.
Rabies, you have no real choice. I mean you do, but this is required by law. 6 months, then 1 year booster then every 3 years.
Hemi has been getting the flu vaccines, different from kennel cough the last few years as well. The last few years the canine flu outbreaks have been severe in our area. So this is a better safe than sorry. Also as of last year this was also required by every training facility here.

We do use a kennel that has certain immunization requirements.

Our vet says it's OK to go 3 years between DHLPP vaccines. That's the date she's willing to document, the kennel accepts that, so that's what I do. As babies, I get the lepto separate from the DHPP but once they've had it once, I'll just do it as part of the DHLPP. For our area the vet says they should get lepto. On years that don't require the DHLPP, I get it separately.

Rabies every 3 years as required by law.

Canine influenza bivalent vaccine yearly as required by the kennel.

Bordatella yearly as required by the kennel.

Our vets recommend the Lyme vaccine. Both Lark and Chase have tested positive for tick borne illnesses, so yeah, we do that, too.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a nurse and I get all the recommended vaccines, my kids got all the recommended vaccines, and my dogs get whatever is recommended by our vets also.

I never did Lepto or Lyme (Vet against too) and we are out in bush areas all the time. I do think the vaccine for both is improved since Oban was young. We did KC because of training and competing but stopped after meeting so many dogs who got it anyway. I've never been asked if Oban had it but he has not been boarded. I titre the rest and don't need them and got an exemption on the Rabies due to medical issues but then renewed it anyway after some bad neighbour stories around here. I will not renew the Rabies next time around. I would vaccinate a new puppy with all the recommended cores, no bordatella, Lyme or Lepto, and then titre - I mean if I got a new puppy. But I would research anew with a new puppy as things change. I did try to separate when vaccines were given but could only change the time of Rabies. I can't get the DHPPA, or whatever the heck the letters are, in anything other than a combo.

Rabies, one year booster then every three years. By law.

Kennel cough, annually (though some boarding and daycare places require it every six months). I do it annually.

DHPP, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks, then one year later, then every three years (this is the new protocol that many vets, boarding kennels, daycares, etc. are following, and what the AVA and universities suggest, but your area may be different) or annual titers. Vets have known for years, over a decade, that annual vaccinations are not necessary and progressive vets have been following the three year rule for quite sometime. It's recently become more mainstream.

Lepto is a non core vaccine, but I do it because of field work and the fact that I live in an urban area and rats are common. Not to mention is is transmittable to humans.

I don't do Lyme as it's not necessary in my area.

We do all the core vaccines + lepto. We have a cattle farm with several ponds and irrigation channels and are surrounded by other ranches and farmland. Since the greatest risk of lepto exposure is associated with swimming in livestock contaminated waters and they are LABS, they get that vaccine.

I do all the standard puppy vaccinations, then a set one year later then a last set 3 years later (DHPP) then I stop other than the required rabies. I titer test past that point

No lepto, kennel cough or lyme at all

Thanks, everyone, for your replies on this. I talked with my vet today and she said that if Diggity gets a fourth DHPP at 16 weeks, he is protected for 3 years. I didn't know that until I talked to her today. That seems worth it to me, to have one more shot that holds him for 3 years versus skipping it and having to go back next year.

I am still on the fence about lyme...if I knew it would protect him, say 90%, I would do it. But I feel like it has less protection percentages than that. Still thinking...

The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine apparently cannot reach consensus on vaccinating against Lyme either. (PDF) ACVIM consensus update on Lyme borreliosis in dogs and cats

I didn't know the DHPP after 16 weeks was supposed to last 3 years either. Henry will get #3- 2 days before he turns 15 weeks so I guess I'll stick with 3. With 2 dogs and spreading vaccines out so much, it almost feels like I go in to get vaccines monthly nearly year round.

I'd be curious what your vet says about if adding a fourth one after he turns 16 will protect him for 3 years. I also wonder if there are different kinds of vaccines they use that work that way. I wish it weren't so much of a mystery!!
