My Yellow Lab puppy was just spayed last Saturday. Today makes one week. My vet doesn't do overnight care after spays, so we took her home same-day. She was great for the first night, I assume due to the in-office meds. Since then, it has been absolute Hell.
She has 2 Kongs, a retriever roll, and a bully stick and she still barks and screams constantly. Almost all day. I have to put her in the bedroom crate and go away from her for her to stop and fall asleep. She even became a little aggressive and started biting us, so, after a follow-up, we discovered that she was having an adverse reaction to the Trazodone. The vet has prescribed Acepromazine, which unfortunately had to be ordered and will hopefully arrive tomorrow.
Because she has been so insane, even in her crate, she caused a tiny bit of fluid buildup in the area. It's a bit red. The vet says she still needs to heal and stay quiet. She has to be crated almost 24/7 due to running and jumping, attempts at counter-surfing, the whole bit. Every time I try to keep her out with me to watch tv or lay in the floor, she ends up being way too rough and tries to jump OVER the back of the couch. She also bites. I attempted a very short walk with her this evening and I was terrified that she would pop the stitches because she would just lunge and jump in every direction...so that's not an option.
I'm sure many of you have had experience with this. My other dogs were all great and amazing during this time. Poppy is a little troublemaker, it seems lol.
What can I do to get her quiet so that she can actually heal????

The vet said they didn't have anything in-house, hence why they had me order the Acepromazine from their online pharmacy. I honestly find it very, very hard to believe that they didn't have a single product in their office that could be used to help her.
Gosh, you must be at your wits end! I hope the acepromazine comes soon- my daughter's dog was terrified of thunderstorms and fireworks so on July 4th they'd give her a dose and that poor pup was out like a light for hours. Maybe the dose was a bit more than she needed (?) But if Poppy is that wild, you'd probably appreciate some respite from her behavior. When was her last dose of Trazadone and how long until it's supposed to wash out? My dogs usually appeared to be ready to roll after a few days but before the end of their restricted period. Fortunately you're a week past surgery already so you're at least half way through, if not more. How long did the vet say to keep her quiet? Good luck, I'm sure she'll be ready to race off like a rocket when she's allowed to run again.
Sorry to see you and your pup going through this. Personally, I think I'd find a new vet.

I think I would also find a new vet. I see this as an emergency and they at least should have order a med over-night or check with other vets in the area. They couldn't give her a script for a sedative until the other med came in? I would be livid. Poor girl, with all that jumping and "crazy lab" activity I would be worried about her popping stitches, they look rather red (inflamed?). I really feel for you, I think I would try a 1/2 dose of the trazadone when the last dose wears off, maybe she is just very sensitive?
How old is you pup? I am taking our girl next week so I'm hoping she will do alright. Hope your little one will heal and get calm soon!
Yeah, having been through 2 spays now with high energy field labs, I’d say your girl is beyond the norm. Your vet is not taking this seriously enough, imho. Hugs to you all!

Go into GoodRX.com They price shop and will show you who in your area carries it. You can then print out the coupon and a temporary GoodRX ID card and go get your prescription filled at the local place of your choice. Your vet will have to write you a prescription.
I agree on finding another vet....this is not right.

Poor baby...I agree with others here. She should have stayed at the Vet to be monitored.
I hope she will be okay.
