    Tick Preventatives and kids

My vet suggested advantage II for Cooper at his first puppy appt so that's what I've been giving him monthly for flea prevention (he is now 7 months). It doesn't kill or repel ticks however. I asked the vet why she didn't recommend Frontline or advantix, which takes care of all the blood suckers, and her opinion was that too many dogs don't tolerate them well. She recommended that Cooper wear a tick collar (preventic) for the summer to take care of the ticks. I just put it on him and and feeling uneasy about it because my 5 and 7 year old are always hugging him..... and we have to do collar grabs on occasion. Even though they know not to touch it.... it seems unavoidable. The drops absorb in and are out of sight and out of mind..... I wonder if the drops are safer for homes with kids? Owners with young kids..... what do you do? Thanks in advance for advise!

Was there an insert with the collar or an 800 # to call? That would be where I would start. In the mean time I would make sure the kids wash their hands thoroughly if they do grab the collar.

Firstly, I wouldn't use a tick prevention collar with kids around. You do know you can purchase Frontline or Advantix without a vet, right? TSC and other pet supply stores carry them, heck, so does my supermarket pharmacy. Or you can buy online (I use Dr Foster and Smith's).

I would just go buy some Front line and switch to that. Make sure you are also giving something for HW preventative

I'd not use a tick collar with small kids. Even a 7 yr old is usually very demonstrative with their dogs as far as hugging and petting and giving kisses.

I know when my husband was in Iraq many of the soldiers were having family members send them flea and tick collars to keep the sand fleas away from them. They wore them under their jackets but had t-shirts on and they still ended up with burns on their skin from it where it laid against their skin. Kids skin is so much more sensitive.

I do remember when all we had were collars though, no drops and I am still alive but I would assume that drops would be safer. I could be wrong though, haven't researched it.
