My comments would be the same, regardless of who is thinking about breeding him. If the breeder is not actively mentoring, there are no plans in place for competition to get independent evaluation of the dog as a potential stud, no discussion about what type of clearances would be customary and when they should take place, then I still think the best thing is for this dog to be neutered at an appropriate age.

To quote the OP, "I am not necessarily keen on leaving him intact if he is not going to be used as breeder."

Really? I don't know of any rescue organization that makes it their mission to tell other people when to spay/neuter. We spay/neuter all of our animals before they go to their new homes and that's for very good reason. In rescue, reducing the number of unwanted animals is the goal and as "responsible and reasonable" as someone may seem, even after a thorough screening, you can never really know. You have no idea how many stupid people there are in the world until you work with the public in any capacity, or hell, just look at the pet section of Craigslist. Most of the dog owning population has no idea what it means to keep an intact animal safe and responsibly. My own father is a perfect example. He has a Lab that is now 6 years old and when he was a puppy, I advised him to wait to neuter until he was done growing. Do you know what? That turned into him breeding Cody, without health clearances, to a bitch who also had no health clearances just so her owners could make some money. And trust me, I wasn't afraid to vehemently voice my disapproval and list the multitude of reasons this shouldn't be done. People don't care. I'll tell you what, that's the last time I ever give that advice to the average pet owner. If I had kept my big mouth shut, my dad probably would have listened to his vet and neutered Cody around 6 months of age. It's not fear mongering, it's reality.

To the OP, you have stated you have no interest in breeding, which is great. I'd advise you to read some of the stickies, do some research and decide the age you think is best to neuter. I think 10 months is a bit early, if I were you, I would wait another 6-8 months at least. I have a 4-month-old male puppy and I do plan to neuter him eventually, but I will wait until he's at least 2 years old.
