Mel started her first heat cycle on May 9 this year and she was born June 14 which made her close to 11 months old, but female dogs are different just like people - genetics, size, breed, you name it. Spent 28 long days watching her like an eagle, but it was worth it

Our male has not been neutered, so I will definitely make sure they have no contact for at least 4 weeks (as said above).

She has no interest in her toys or any treats we give her and is still very sooky and seems to always want my attention. She still eats everyday like normal.
I've been checking on her vulva and it doesn't seem to be swelling yet and there is no sign of blood.
I'll be keeping a good eye on her over the next week and to see if her behavior changes.

I really hope this happens for her soon as I'd love for both Zoe and our male, Lucky, to have playtime together. They both need the company.

Thank you so much for the advice and information. I'll most definitely keep you all updated if there are any changes.

Luna gets hormonal for a week or two before her heats start. She just seems "off". I call it "puppy PMS".

I am sure you will remain hawk-eyed vigilant and crate them both when you are not there to supervise fully, and you understand that they must be 100% supervised at all times. Even running to the bathroom, close one dog in with you or crate one while you're showering, etc. It's very important.

If an accident does happen, which if you are vigilant should not, please take her to your vet ASAP to get an abortive pill.

Males can still sire a litter up to about 6 weeks after neuter. Females are not all fertile on the 4th week of heat cycle as mentioned. My girls ovulate around day 13. Just so you know. There is no text book.

Press a tissue to her vulva while she is standing and look for light pink to red to know she is in heat - when you suspect.

She will most likely get more clingy or standoffish when she is coming in. Slight personality changes.... licking her vulva more than normal...
