    UPDATE

No definitive answers yet, but vet said Cooper is taking the fluids well & he has not vomited or had diarrhea again. They are treating him as though he has gastroenteritis. The abdominal x-Ray showed 2 areas that looked a little odd to the vet so they are taking another x ray after 8 hrs of fluid treatment to see if it moved on. She said it could just be a gas pocket.... or a blockage. She said that if his problem is gastroenteritis .... there is a good chance he'll survive with treatment. Will know more after 2nd X-ray. They'll call at midnight after the x ray if there is a problem. Otherwise, we'll get another update tomorrow am.

Good news! The 2nd x-ray showed a soft mass that had moved to his colon. Either a small piece of fecal matter or a blockage that had been dislodged from the IV fluids. They fed him a few meatballs of wet dog food, which he scarfed down. They will monitor him for vomiting/ diaharea. In an hour or so, they will give him a 1/2 can of a bland GI prescription diet and see how it passes through his tract. If all is well, we should be able to bring him home this afternoon! We'll feed him the prescription diet for a few days, then on to regular food. Phew!

I don't know what caused this. I had opened a brand new bag of Fromm Gold Large Breed Puppy two days before he got sick. I have 33 lbs of it, that I think I may toss, just in case it was due to a problem with the food. Cooper had been on that food for months and had been doing great on it. Since his body is essentially a blank slate now due to the vomiting/ diaharea and fluids.... I can easily switch to something else. Any suggestions for a grain free (or at least no corn and soy) all stages food for my 9 month old? Or do I try ProPlan? Which one if so? I know everyone has their own thoughts and opinions of which foods is best for a lab. Your comments will help me decide. Thanks in advance!

I'd wait till I could examine what he pooped out before I decided it was the food. You may find something like cloth, mulch, etc., as the culprit.

I feed NutriSource and PureVita grain-free to mine (the bison and bison-based Heartland) and am very satisfied. I THINK they're ALS but not sure.

Good luck with Cooper's continued recovery.

I would wait also, maybe it's a sock or who knows.....my young lab will eat just about anything. Hope he feels better soon.
