    Cooper and the ladies

Cooper has been acting crazy the past two days. Pacing, barking, acting like he wants out of the house (not to go potty).....basically acting like a pacing caged tiger at the zoo. For the first time yesterday.... while I was in the backyard with him, he displayed these behaviors and then proceeded to jump our fence and take off down the street! I caught up with him 5 houses down, where some new people just moved. They have a yellow lab mix and some other dog.... Cooper had his nose pressed against their glass door and was whining. The lab was on the other side, barking. I don't know these people and we've never met their dogs. I dragged him home and he did it again less than an hour later. I am wondering if the lab is s female in heat. Tonight...same behaviors.... pacing, 'caged animal' wild eyed look about him. Trying to get out of the house! These behaviors are really irritating and I am worried he'll get loose and get hit. He is intact....will be 10 months old next week. Advise??? I wanted to make it to 18 months before neutering....I can't take this kind of behavior and don't know how to stop it. its dangerous (for him).... and it was like he completely tuned me out. Help! Does this sound like a sex crazed teenager? I read that a dog can smell a bitch in heat from a mile away. ((Sigh)).

It would not surprise me if it was a bitch in season. I'd check with your new neighbors, and make sure Cooper is kept secure for his own safety.

^^ yes, check with the owners of the new dogs. Can you make your fence higher? At ten months Cooper is at about the height of his testosterone surge and that's not helping you. He might just be crazy period at this time, though most dogs I know seem more bewildered and it's other dogs that are the problem, targeting the teenager.

The Puppy License to Misbehave section in this article is not what appears to be going on in your problem, yet. It might develop yet and it's darn interesting.

Is their female in heat? If yes, well, although a bit exaggerated, it's normal. The good news is, it will pass.

I know our pup always has his nose to the ground and is oblivious to most everything. If their dog is not in heat (lets hope) maybe he just wants to play with them.

Does sound like the bitch is in heat. Watch Cooper carefully and leash when outside. Don't be surprised if he goes off his food a little; he has other things on his mind.

Agreed with everyone else. Sound like the other dog is in heat, and your dog knows and wants out.

Confirmed, two girls in heat across the street. Will he always be 'level 10' about a girl in heat.... or will he chill out a little as he gets older? Someone mentioned a hormone surge around 10 months.

Nah... I have an 8 year old and he still goes berserk when he smells a female in heat, especially if they live in the same building with us. He has a better recall though than he used to and I don't need to run after him as I did when he was younger. So, if you plan to keep your dog intact, this is something you'll have to deal with for a very, very long time All you can do is work on some basic obedience to keep him safe.

Thats very dangerous behavior. Im sorry there is absolutely no health benefit worth waiting to neuter him for if he is going to jump walls to escape. What if he runs into the street, what if you cant catch him? I personally think you should neuter him asap

Other alternative, he is leashed at all times, including in his own back yard since you now know he can jump the fence. That isnt fair to him at all.
