UTI was the first thought. You could take in a urine sample without having to take Harper in just to check. It's not uncommon at all in puppies.
Hi all! So puppy Harper has been a great, if chaotic addition to our house. I have noticed a new phenomenon in the past 2-3 days where she'll squat a couple of times when we take her out to pee. She seems to get it all out the first time, so not sure what the second squat is all about. It's a couple of minutes after the first squat, so not like she's been playing a lot in between squats. She has good bladder control otherwise (no excitement pee, no random dribble) and is doing well with housebreaking. Her energy, appetite and sleep are also fine. Our vet said Harper's got a bit of a recessed vulva, but wasn't concerned - she (the vet) said Harper would grow into all of the extra skin. We're going to hold off on spay until she's 18 months - 2 years old anyway. Is this behavior typical of a UTI?

I would definitely have a urine sample checked for a UTI.

I'd get a urine sample to check for a UTI. Not sure how old Harper is, but when Bruce was 11-12 weeks old, it seemed like he was peeing every 5 minutes, so i had him checked for a UTI. Came back negative. I think he just liked to pee. He grew out of it about about 15-16 weeks.
Agreed, UTI is first thought.
FYI, recessed/inverted vulvas are very common in Labs (my breeder said 25%). I would ask your vet if she has one, but many vets don't know it exists. They usually pop out naturally at their first heat.

Thanks all. She's going in for her next set of shots soon, so I'll double check on the recessed vulva and bring in a urine sample as well. It's always something with these pups! But they're so freaking adorable, it more than makes up for it.
It is always something! Recessed vulvas mean UTIs constantly... Luna had 2 by the time she was 4 months old. That's how we know! Even if she doesn't have one, I would wipe her vulva with an unscented baby wipe every time she comes in from peeing, or after she's been somewhere unfamiliar. Or at least as many times as you can remember! Tends to curb those pesky UTIs ;-)
