    Puppy weight - concern?

    Hi everyone,
At Bella's first vet visit at 9 weeks, she was 11 pounds. She's not a huge girl. Her father seems to be average in size to me - he's the "English" variety and more stocky in build. Bella's mother looks a little more petite and if my memory serves me correctly, the breeder said she weighed around 60 pounds.

My question is this...Bella is 15 weeks old and weighs 21.5 pounds. Does this seem small and should I be concerned? She looks healthy, has appropriate fat, etc. Bella is active as labs are and should be, she feels well, eats and eliminates well, etc. I know this is an obvious question for the vet and we do have our next appt. on Monday. However, I just wanted your take on things. My chocolate lab was much larger at this age so that's why I'm a little concerned. The vet so far has not been concerned about her size.

    Thanks again!

    Jenny

    P.S. I will post pictures soon. =)

Maybe she's just a petite little thing. She seems to be gaining at a good rate, so I doubt your vet is concerned.

My boy has been on track for about a two pound gain per week. He was 18 pounds at 8 weeks, and 26 pounds at 12 weeks. Theo is a bog boy, and I think he has been since almost birth. What does your breeder say?

I haven't asked the breeder yet but that's a good reminder to do so. I will send her a message to get some feedback.

My boy didn't hit 21 pounds till he was 16 weeks old. He is bench bred and matured to 72 pounds which is perfect for him and actually at the top end of the weight allowed in the Canadian standard of 60 to 75 lbs working weight. At a year old he weighed 67 pounds.

Considering Bella is a girl and the working weights at maturity are 55 to 70 pounds in both the U.S. and Canadian standards then Bella is tracking to be heavier than my boy is. Don't worry, you can't tell by the weight she is now where she will end up for sure. She sounds fine to me, especially with all you say about her activity and fat and appetite.

You'll see an awful lot of Labs that are way too big. For some reason girls are the same weight and height allowed in the U.S. and Canada but your boys can be heavier, though not taller.

Thanks Snowshoe! I hate to keep comparing Bella to my chocolate lab I recently lost. However, she was too heavy for a period of time (over 100 pounds) due to my ignorance. So, I'm trying to be very vigilant this time around with weight concerns. I know my chocolate girl had more quality time in the end because we took care of her weight. I'm no vet or anywhere close to being an expert (I'm here asking questions!!!), but Bella looks wonderful right now. =) I appreciate the information and I feel better.

I just went through my weight records for Emma, and at 12 weeks she was 16.3#, 14 weeks 22#, 16 Weeks 27.8, 6 months 42, a year 60-62.4. So I'd say she's doing fine. We average 2# lbs a week till she was 6 months, Then growth slowed down a lot.

Luna was 11 pounds when we brought her home. She grew really slowly. It's a good thing! You want them to grow nice and slow.

Sometimes, especially with the girls, just ignore the dad. With my girl Grace, didn't matter who I bred her to, the girls in the litter were carbon-copies of her. So if mom was small, your girl will probably be small too.

I had a chunker..my Murphey was 17 lbs at 8 weeks! The Breeder knicknamed him "Moose". At 13 months he is a very active and trim 75 lb "English" lab!
