    Post Testicle Not Dropping

We just got back from our 15 week shots/check up and his one testicle still refuses to drop. They say the surgery will be more like spaying a female, which means more evasive and more money. Yay!

Question: anyone ever been through this?

Another Question: do I tell the breeder? Will they even do anything about it?

Were you planning on neutering him before the age of 6 months? Up to that time, testicles can still drop on their own...although they're usually dropped by about 2 months. A lot of vets won't want to neuter before 6 months if this is an issue (most folks don't want to neuter before 6 months anyway).

But you do want to get that testicle out of there so that it doesn't cause problems later on....and, yes, it's more invasive.

If his testicle truly doesn't drop, the breeder should be notified. This is something that should keep a dog from being bred (your dog)....though how a breeder reacts with the parents is unknown to me. I presume the sire wouldn't be bred again by a reputable breeder but I don't know....I can't remember if there's a chance it's anything but inherited from a parent, if there's a test for the sire, etc.

Yes, tell the breeder. It tends to be hereditary.

I wasn't planning on neutering him before 6 months. I was going to wait longer just because I have heard there is controversy over neutering too early....not sure if I should just do it around 6 - 8 months since his testicle isn't dropping and we should get it out or not?

I will let the breeder know what the vet said and see what they say. Probably not much would be my guess but I would think if it is an inherited thing, they wouldn't want this to happen to any of their other puppies but who knows?

It's not a big deal, but does cost a pet owner maybe a little more when they fix the dog. The breeder just needs to know that it was produced. There is no test to know who's throwing the gene. The breeder just needs to know it was produced when the pedigrees where crossed.

I'd still wait until after growth plate closure, regardless. He will be fine, but yes, tell your breeder. Which side hasn't dropped? Sometimes they just get caught up, and it's not that bad of a surgery.

The left side hasn't dropped. She even stood him up on his back feet and said it was up in his belly because she couldn't get a good feel on it.

Is it ever down at home? At his age, they can sometimes still suck it up inside when cold or nervous. Only check with warm hands when he is relaxed, perhaps during a soothing light massage.

I would wait until his growth plates are closed.

I too would wait for his growth plates to close before considering neutering. Please don't let your vet pressure you. As long as YOU are responsible it is the best thing for your boy, all around.

A few years ago we had a Malamute neutered. During his last exam before the neuter, both testicles had dropped. When he went in for the surgery and they had him on the operating table they realized that one had recessed and they had to do the spay like surgery. I don't know how much different the cost was, I didn't really care. But he was in a lot of pain for a few days afterwards and had to wear the cone of shame and everything.
