    Teeth Size

Oliver is now 5 1/2 months old and his adult teeth have come in. His back molars are massive in size. Can you tell how big he will be as an adult based on the size of his teeth? My husband and I have been having the "how big will he get" conversation. He thinks based on his teeth, he will be a good sized dog. But based on his leveling off on growing, I don't think he will get all that big. He hasn't been weighed in a while (mainly because I can no longer pick him up to weigh him on our home scale) but I estimate he is around 50 lbs. He has gotten a lot taller in the last few weeks but I think his filling out has definitely slowed down. Anyway, just wondering if you can tell how big a dog will be based on how large their teeth are.

I know you can tell the future size of a dog by the size of its paws, I've never heard anything about teeth size and growth though!

I've never seen the paws being accurate. Especially since they always look big compared to the rest of a puppy.

Take how much he weighed at 4 months and double it. That'll give you a very close estimate. It's worked on my dogs and my friends' dogs. Also, I worked at a vet clinic when I was in my 20s and we'd always look at puppy versus adult weight and it was very accurate for Labs, Boxers, Goldens, and other large breed dogs. I can't remember if it works with really small dogs. Back then small dogs were not very popular, at least not in the area I worked.

No, you can't tell anything from the size of the teeth. Nor from paws. You can guesstimate based on what the parents looked like, that's about it.

I wonder, for anyone here who has had their dog as a puppy, was the adult weight not approximately doubled at four months? I've actually never met a dog that did not follow that rule of thumb.

Hm, I never even paid attention to Thor's tooth size so I couldn't say. I think the double 4 month weight is a pretty good marker. We weren't sure how big he'd be - his dad is 90 lbs and mom 55 lbs. He was the only male in a small litter and was huge compared to his sisters when we picked him up at 8 weeks old. He's leveled off at 14 months old around 75 lbs. At four months old I think he was around 35, so he's a little over double that.

Oban was 26 pounds at four months and a good weight for him now, at 7 years, is 74 pounds. Which is closer to triple his weight at four months. At a year old he was 67 pounds.

Zoeys weight is pretty much doubled from 4 months old, she was about 32 pounds or so and she is 70 pounds now at age 6. Thats going to be your best guess at adult weight if you havent seen the parents, double the weight he was at 4 months. This does not work with small dogs, just larger breeds

Teeth and paws have nothing to do with adult size. Good example is my corgi, she has teeth that are almost the size of Zoeys but she is only 20 pounds. Corgis have normal sized teeth with little compact bodies

Hasn't held true for any of my dogs.
