    Heartworm and Flea Meds?

Jasper is 9 weeks old now and just had his second set of shots today. The vet wants him to take Trifexa for Heartworm and for flea and tick prevention. I am so worried about what I give him. Any thoughts?

Is this it? I don't see anywhere where it says something about tick prevention.

Yes beth, my mistake about the tick portion. This is the heartworm prevention the vet wants me to give him.

I would not use Trifexis, I personally don't like combo products that do everything. And if you Google, Trifexis has had a LOT of complaints that it makes dogs sick. I use Heartguard for HW, and Frontline Plus for fleas/ticks. I try to take a break from the Frontline in the winter too. But give Heartguard year round.

I try not to give any more of these products than necessary. Mardi gets Heartgard from about April to October/November in our area. Archie had reactions to Heartgard and have changed him to Sentinel. At the time I checked into Trifexis and did not like what I saw.

I live in NE Ohio and use Heartguard plus for my labs age 1.5 and 11 along with a rotation of Frontline plus or advantage II, but only during the warmer months.. so around May- Novemberish for me.. I have fortunately never had a problem with reaction to meds.. and I do live in a wooded area with several ponds, streams and a ravine so there are mosquitoes! I do support the local bat population though and have "bat houses" to assist in pest control the natural way!!! I also keep an eye on my pups and if there are no signs of fleas I do not treat or will go longer than the recommended monthly dose. Same goes with the Heartguard chew.. if it remains colder longer or earlier I tend to cut back on the monthly or extend the time between doses..

    I wouldn't use Trifexis either.

I've used Frontline TopSpot for many years without side effects...now 7 dogs worth of years...and no fleas. Ticks die but are allowed to attach. I haven't seen that many attached in all these years. (Sunnie had a reaction to Frontline Plus when we tried it after our vet stopped carrying the TopSpot upon the introduction of the Plus.)

We also had a reaction to the heartworm stuff that our vet switched to (their own brand...Vethical...they stopped carrying Heartguard at that time) and we had to go with the variety with the least ingredients.

I have my dogs on Setinal for heartworm and flea prevention and I use frontline in the warmer months for ticks. A few months ago I got fleas from watching a friends dog I used Trifexis for a few months as the setinal only kills the eggs and front line wasn't working fast enough. My cats were on front line for months and I was still finding fleas switched over to revaluation and haven't see one since.

We started sentinel after Bacon's first heartworm test when he was a pup. We then started Frontline for ticks in the warm months. Here in MN he gets Frontline April-November (sometimes early if the thaw is early, and sometimes later if the frost is late and we are out hunting).

I was giving Barley Triflexis recommeded by the vet - and then he got his first tick. Now he gets heart guard and frontline. I also slow down the front line during the winter for both dogs.
