Weird Sound While Walking

The last 2 days, we have gone on walks in new locations. Well, when Oliver is sniffing at something as we are walking, he has been making an odd sound. Not sure if it is normal or not. The best way to describe it is that sound they make before they vomit. Not the hacking but more the wretching deep within. His mouth isn't open and he doesn't act weird, just makes a weird sound. He is a snorer and loud breather too so not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Hmmm, I think I read there's some specialized scent glands, meaning olfactory glands and it's almost like dogs can almost "trap" scents as they're smelling. I've sometimes heard my dogs make a sound like something in the back of their nose or throat has closed off briefly to help concentrate the scents. I'll have to look and see if I can find anything about this or if I just dreamed it up.

^^ Yup, Great minds think alike. On Sunday Oban was unusually pulling and interested in sniffing down a trail we often do. I said to the OH I figured either an intact male or a female coming into heat had walked that trail the same morning. Just a guess but his breathing does sound different and I can often see his mouth open and his lips flopping. I googled and could only find the sound attributed to fear or medical reasons, which could be. But if Oliver only did it for a short time in a certain place this might be it too. Just watch to see when and where he does it again.

When I took him on our morning walk around the neighborhood, he didn't do it. Also, on our other walks, it wasn't constant, just a few quick sounds as he was sniffing. I had to lean close to him to make sure the noise was coming from him and not something else. I guess it is just a more intense sniff since we were in a new location where lots of people and dogs frequent. Thanks Snowshoe and Smartrock!

Could be reverse sneezing...especially if he's pulling/been pulling on his collar (but not only if this has happened).

Danny used to reverse sneeze quite often...he seems to have outgrown it.

He's on a harness that prevents pulling. I wouldn't be able to handle walks with him if he was allowed to pull! Lol.
