Like anything with dogs. If you make it a happy experience then it will be forever. Especially as a puppy that's when they learn. That's when they are excited and when they grow.

My boy at the fireworks show, and yes he has a glow in the dark necklace from a vendor just like all the other kids. I am old myself, I haven't been to a fireworks show in years. I went because Hemi wanted to go. He loves them so much and the crowds and the kids and excitement.

    I love these pictures!
I was hoping they would be posted when I saw the OP's subject and concerns.

A DAP pheromone collar mellows dogs out as would a Thundershirt...if it turns out that you do need something to offset a fireworks or thunderstorm reaction.

However, I don't think it is wise to post pictures like this, giving people the idea that it is appropriate to take dogs to fireworks displays. Statistics show that lots of dogs are lost during holidays of high fireworks use, dogs become frightened and bolt.
    .
Imagine a family with kids AND their dog at a fireworks display and the dog gets upset, even though every one else is having a grand time. Most people aren't going to be willing to drag the kids away from the fireworks because the dog is having a serious issue with them.
    .
Heck, many people would even be clueless to their dog's body language until it's too late. The responsible thing, for most, is not put the dog in that situation to start with.
I completely understand your concern and agree you make a valid point, to a certain extent. However, I don't think Jeff was advocating just anyone take their dog to a fireworks display. Hemi is a very special dog with an amazing owner, as you also mentioned. What I got from his post was an incredible example of how a dog can be confident and enjoy the fun. I am betting Jeff would be the first person to tell others that this is a very special circumstance, one it is important to be confident of before attempting.

It is just great for us to be able to share our own experiences and the fun things some dogs enjoy. Many Labs are not afraid of the loud noises associated with fireworks or even gunfire. I have one that is and one that could care less. A fireworks display with lots of people, especially kids along with the excitement can be heaven for a Lab that enjoys this type of fun. I have one of each and they individually cope with and enjoy such things in their own special way.

Of course some dogs could freak out and it could be ugly but there are definitely dogs like Hemi, Thor, my own Maxx and i am sure plenty of others that enjoy the party!

I am truly not trying to start a war of words, I just wanted to give a different opinion for others to think about.

Agree with those who say just use treats and other distractions. If this is an annual thing, your puppy will need to get used to either this year or next year anyway. I understand that you're concerned with potty time, but again, the puppy will need to get used to all sorts of things. This is the best age for socializing them to everything new - not just people and other dogs but all those things that they will be exposed to in their life with you.

Maxx enjoyed the fireworks and party last night, as much as he has in previous years! He had a blast meeting lots of new friends, especially kids, and enjoyed being a Labrador ambassador. Emma was just as happy to stay inside, in her thunder shirt with my oldest. They both enjoyed some frozen yogurt to complete their 4th of July celebration!
