    Parvo and Sand

Hi everyone! I have a new chocolate lab puppy, almost 10 weeks old. He's had 2 neopar shots while with the breeder and is due for his next combo shot in the next week or two. I want to start getting him out and about for some exercise because my back area is basically the tiniest strip of grass just for going to the bathroom.

I know the technique of short walks on pavement in direct sunlight, but I live on the beach and would love to get him out there. How bad is sand in terms of staying parvo contaminated? I plan to take all of the normal precautions of checking out the area first, avoiding unknown dogs, etc.

    Thanks for the advice!

I wouldn't chance it myself. I suggested puppy k to you in your other post and that would be my first step. Family and friends with healthy, vaccinated dogs for play dates would also be helpful.

Welcome to the forum, please post some pics of your puppy when you can!

Parvo lives on in the soil for months. You don't need to just avoid dogs, you need to avoid where lots of dogs go as well. Waht do your Vet and breeder say? Are either of them familiar with this beach area and do either of them know the Parvo incidences rate for where you live?

We start puppy classes next week so that will definitely help. Our vet didn't give us any particular caution and unfortunately we just moved here so we don't know any people or dogs.

I've read a lot of literature on parvo so I am well versed in the concerns, I just didn't know if sand had the same contraction rates as soil.

    Thanks for your help!

I'm going to go against the grain here (minor pun...grain of sand hehehe) and say you're probably going to be okay to walk your pup on the beach.

Like others have said, the virus lives in soil for a long time, but sand, on a beach, is a bit different, in that it's constantly changing with the waves taking it out and depositing new. Not to mention being washed.

Definitely check with your vet, but I'm going to guess it is fine.

Your pup is up to date with shots for his age. I would take him out. I would take him to a stinky dog park full of poops, but a plain old human beach, I'd probably do it.

Thanks Jen and Sue! I know there's tons of debate on this topic and that everyone makes their own hopefully informed decision in the end. Given that he's had the two neopar shots, which I know are high grade, and that I'm going to be careful, I'm probably going to take him out.

And hopefully you read past my typo (I can't edit for some reason), but I would NOT take him to a dog park. LOL

Hi again everyone! I didn't want to start a whole new thread on basically the same topic, but I'm feeling a little confused. Bubba just had a combo shot today. So that makes 1 neopar at 6 weeks, 1 neopar at 8 weeks, and a combo against parvo at 10 weeks. My understanding was that since he started his vaccinations early with the breeder, he would be good to go after this third shot for his first "legal" outings. Today I was talking to the vet on the phone and he said they like to wait until they're 20 weeks! I don't think he was looking at Bubba's file, and he's not the vet who originally saw him, but I was caught off guard by this and felt like he was just saying the safe new-age vet thing to say.

Am I right in that 2 neopars + a combo = ready for the outdoors or am I wrong?
