This is all news to me!

I finally made my dog's appointment after doing a lot of research, both online and talking to others in the performance world. The bottom line, from what I came up with anyway, was that waiting until they are two would ensure that my dog was fully grown and formed and the chance of decreased drive would be minimal. Why get him neutered at all? First, he doesn't need the distraction, but most importantly, the risk of testicular cancer increases the longer they are intact. That said, testicular cancer is pretty rare. Sam probably did not need to be neutered; he was practically asexual. But, he did get picked on a lot, which went away after his neuter. Linus, on the other hand, is all boy, and while he's not awful at all, there are some habits that are more annoying than anything, and they should decrease after his surgery.

this was 20 plus years ago,and so I can have another one from his blood line, but as you can see with this pup ,I only buy labs from top quality pedigree lines with all the necessary paperwork includind the family lines history all AKC certified,I would not even consider breeding a lab with any underlying health issuses but my days of even thinking of breeding are long gone ,but thanks, some difference from then and now -img_9234-jpg

Don't want to hijack the OP's thread and won't go into the whole idea of thinking that a dog's organs are detachable when not required !!!! but I'm intrigued by the couple of posters who mentioned it was normal for a breeder to request that the puppy is neutered - is this usual??

I’m not sure how it is in England, but I know in (continental) Europe neutering male dogs routinely is MUCH less common than it is here where traditionally almost all pets were neutered. Among educated pet owners that may be changing though. Personally, Mulder was my only male and we left him intact at the breeder’s request because she had thought she might want to breed to him (she ended up suggesting a pairing with a girl she had bred but who wasn’t owned by her). He was intact his entire life (a month shy of 16 years) and we never had any behavioral problems because of it. I think some breeders require it from the days before limited registration as it is a way of ensuring that a male they produced isn’t being bred against their wishes.

At the moment, all I have is girls, but in the future if I had another male I don’t think I’d neuter him without a good reason.
