    Diarrhea issues

My 4 month old puppy had issues with diarrhea for about 5 days. We think it may be from the bully sticks or possibly overeating. We read that sometimes bully sticks can contain bacteria that can make your dog sick. These were from Brazil. Also, due to a miscommunication he was fed twice Saturday afternoon about an hour apart. Saturday we noticed the stool was loose and by Sunday it was liquid. So we started him on chicken and rice all day Monday and by Monday night he had a normal looking stool. So we started to wean him back Tuesday by adding 1/2 a cup of kibble and less chicken and rice. By Tuesday night it was back to liquid. So Wednesday back to chicken and rice but this time I added some canned pumpkin and a little non-fat plain yogurt. Yesterday afternoon, night, and this morning all normal stool. So I'm trying to wean him back again today. So big question. Because the stool has gone back to normal two different times, I'm hoping that means we are out of the woods as far as anything really serious is concerned right? Maybe he just had something bad from the bully stick or his stomach was irritated from overfeeding? Of course if it starts again he's going to the vet right away. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Could he have even developed an allergy to the food he's had his whole life? Maybe a bad batch of food (it's a quality food from the tractor supply store). BTW, his energy level has been normal. Thanks!

Think a combination of too much food kind of overstimulated his system. I would keep weaning him back to his normal food and with bully sticks, if you are looking for something for your pup to chew maybe a bone or antler as Lilly entertains herself with chewing her antler. Found it a useful tool to help her understand the difference between actions inside and actions outside.

Good Luck. Good sign with a normal energy level. We found Lilly to have problems with the Lamb and Rice we were giving her, so switched to Chicken and Rice. On poop watch here too.

Oh I forgot to mention, his antler had some kind of "funkyness" on one end so I tossed it. He also had a new chew toy that was a duck looking thing with a plastic bottle inside. It looked OK, but was made in China so I tossed that too. I did notice this morning when I mixed the kibble in with the chicken and rice that he INHALED it. That kibble did not get chewed so hopefully doesn't re-upset his stomach. I'm thinking about either serving the kibble separate for lunch, or maybe even tossing it in the blender?

Do you wet the kibble? That would slow down consumption a bit probably.

As far as the didi goes, could be anything. My first thought was, drop off a stool sample to the vet to run a fecal, just to be sure. Second thought was possibly a bad batch of kibble. Bully sticks are also rich and can cause loose stools. Could also be stress, or even water.

Do you have a probiotic/digestive enhancer? I would add that to each meal to help out a bit. Animal Essentials makes a good one if you can find it.

What I would do, is get a new bag of kibble just to be sure. Wet the kibble and add only a powder probiotic/digestive enzyme. No extras like treats or bully sticks. Use kibble for training. No yogurt. Probably wouldn't use pumpkin either just because it would only mask the problem. And drop off a stool sample to the vet just to be sure you're in the clear.

As long as your puppy is eating fine, drinking fine, peeing fine and activity is normal then you are probably fine.

    Good luck!
