    Puppy Contracts with Breeders

In the questionaire that I submitted there was a question which asked if we were acceptable to a neuter/spay contract. We are acceptable as we have no intention of breeding and feel at the RIGHT time, neutering/spaying is good for our dogs.

What other contracts do breeders have?

I know I've read about food.

    Just curious.

Thanks. I think it would be good for breeder to explain to layman about these contracts. Not feeling someone is still controlling my pup through these contracts, but the breeder knows his/her lines and knows the benefits of staying the course.

With our breeder, there was no contract concerning neuter, but we are close with her. We have a verbal agreement that we will wait until at least 18 months until we neuter (we will not be neutering). It is ultimately your choice about neuter and spay, and we just have decided against it.

Ours was long, but it was mostly common sense stuff. Our breeder went over it in detail with us the day of pick up- I think she emailed us a copy to look over before that and went over the major points over the phone during our first few contacts.

I'm sure if you are very concerned you could call and ask about it with your chosen breeder before you commit.

It's not really your choice when you have a valid contact. Not sure how often it happens but the breeder can certainly take you to court to enforce the contract.

In our contract, she needs to be spayed no later then 2 years. That if he finds out about the pup is being tied up outside alone that he has the right to come get the pup. Also, if there are any issues with her we let him know and he's always willing to take the dog back no questions asked. Even though I would never do that.

I think its mostly common sense stuff for people like us who are on a specific breed forum. But I can see why they do it, since some people in this world aren't the most responsible owners.

Oh, I agree. I am saying in absence of a contract it is your choice. With a contract signed, there would be nothing really to do

Unless the pup is going to a 'show home', pretty much any responsible breeder will have something in the contract about spay/neuter as well as limited registration. In light of more recent research, many now are stipulating that the spay/neuter be done at an age after growth plates are fully developed. Some may stipulate certain foods and/or weight/exercise conditions in order for the hip/elbow guarantee to remain valid. Many also stipulate puppy or basic obedience classes. In addition, most require that you let them know if you decide to rehome the dog at any time in its life. All of these things are for the good of the pup's health (physical and emotional). The bottom line is that a reputable breeder feels responsible for the pups they bring into the world throughout the dog's entire life. I personally have never seen a contract that wasn't designed to promote responsible pet ownership. Just my two cents.

Thanks Sam I am, I am going to do what the breeder asks. I think if we do neuter (yes he's a Male!) it will be at the suggested time of the breeder. Also food will be followed.

A responsible breeder goes through a lot to get his/her line to where it is. Why mess it up? He's/She's protecting what he/she has worked so hard for.

You think this is tough, with all these contracts? You should enter the bunny world. This is a piece of cake compared to the bunny world.

    Thanks again, Sam I am.

I would definitely suggest you ask for a copy of the contract before pick up day. That gives you time to go over it in detail. Trust me, on the day of pick up you may sign anything with little to no attention to what you are signing. Once that precious puppy is in your arms often all common sense goes out the window!

Definitely a smart suggestion. Thanks so much. Already requested the breeder's protocol on visits, and can see the pup at 5 weeks. At that time, we will talk about contracts and get copies. I have a pick up date of July 26/27. Also will be asking advise on where to go regarding education of the pup.
