Poor baby! Have not had experience with a prolapsed rectum. Wanted to send along healing mojo.

what next- in addition to a recessed vulva now puppy Pearl has a rectal prolapse we got a call from the petsitter/walker about 2 hours after she got there today- Pearl's first day home alone (1 1/4 hr a.m., was to be another 1 hr pm but I came home from work early). The sitter said Pearl was fine in her crate, ate, played, pee'd and poo'd then she noticed a small mass of red tissue extruding from Pearl's butt. She recommended coming home and taking her into the vet (she worked in a vet office before) so I did- good thing, poor baby. the vet diagnosed it, gave me steroidal ointment and 5 mg prednisone tabs (ugh) told me to use cold compresses and come back if the tissue did not reduce and go back... well then Pearl vomited on the way home and 3 more times after! I suspect too much kong treat (kibble, peanut butter, canned food in small amounts- but its new to her) and the car ride/trauma of having a vet try to push the prolapse back in (but it could be parasites I read so stool sample tomorrow???) now I don't dare feed her poor pup... anyone have experience with this????

it's really bizarre- we have never heard of either condition until the last week or so. Today at work when I told them I had to leave early for a possible prolapsed rectum they were pretty speechless .... as I would be too!! I think puppy Pearl puts too many things in her mouth and we try to avoid her eating sticks, twigs, grass, bugs (big fat June bugs), rocks, leaves, (you name it) but some things get by and that along with the recently introduced peanut butter (and maybe her kiddie pool) is just too much for her little system. We are going to to try to keep her inside a little more (and away from the ferocious blackflies/mosquitos!) and only on the kibble.... her butt looks better tonight though she is tired out so fingers are crossed. poor little sweetie....
Aww. Poor girl. I have no words of advice, just wanted to say hope she is better soon!

Poor baby! I don't think I would withhold all food though, unless your vet specifically instructed you to.
ETA - definitely take a fresh stool sample for testing if you haven't done so already!

good news- her butt looks better this a.m.- still a little bit red/inflamed so keeping up steroidal ointment but we have not put her on prednisone as her tummy might still be upset (a little dry heave at 6 a.m. got us up) but slow feeding her wet kibble and some water went well and nothing came up again by the time I left at 8:30. Our great pet sitter is there now. We have a vet app't this morn which I made a couple weeks ago to decide which vet to go with. This is the vet we used before, with Wilson, and maybe she will have more insight. Hope to take a stool sample if she poos for the sitter!
