    Diarrhea?

This dog...*bangs head against the nearest wall*

So he woke me up at 2am to go outside (which was unusual as he's been sleeping through the night for the past 2 1/2 weeks or so, but I took him out anyway). He ran into the back and had diarrhea. It wasn't absolute water/liquid, it was more of a runny diarrhea. Anyway, he finished up and we came back in. 2hrs later, he woke up again, took him out, and he had just a little bit but not a ton (little bit as in, a few drops or so). Woke up at 6, took him out, didn't do much, fed him his breakfast, and he went back to bed as he usually does after breakfast. Around 11 or so (his mid-morning feeding), I fed him and he ate. Then I took him out and he went again, but this time it was a little firmer. After he finished, I threw his kong around for a while to exercise him and we came back in. He fell asleep in his usual spot and woke up an hour later. I decided to give him a bit of peanut butter in his kong (dumb me I guess), he worked on that, and then took his other afternoon nap. About an hour ago, I took him out before his early evening meal, and he had diarrhea again. This time, its looser and more liquid than I've seen all day. We came back in, I prepared his meal, and put it on the floor. He wanted nothing to do with it. Tried hand feeding him, snubbed it, ran off to play with his toys. I decided maybe putting a small piece of baloney would entice him a bit. He followed me to the fridge, jumped on me (as usual), put it in his dish, and he snubbed it again. I gave him some plain yogurt on a tablespoon and he ate that in a second. We came back over by his dish, snubbed it again. He went in his bed (by himself) and stretched out and started whining (not constantly, but on and off). Now he's off chewing on his rope (or hopefully his rope and not the couch) and fine.

He's been drinking and playing all day too. Normal otherwise, just has a case of diarrhea. (Now, the not eating his dinner may be my fault due to the peanut butter and dinner being close together. I'll take credit for that one)

    I honestly don't know what's going on.

This could be one of four things:

    1. A small, brown labrador decided that the grass looked delicious and ate a ton of that last night before bed, causing him to get sick.

    2. A small, brown labrador decided that goose "presents" looked appetizing and had a bite of those (I've been watching him like a hawk and pulling it out of his mouth when he gets a hold of them)

    3. The same small and brown labrador is secretly eating the mulch woodchips by the flowerbed

    4. He's teething (but what's causing the runs?)

    Help!

Update: He went over to his dish just now and started eating his dinner. Went out again and had just a teeny bit of watery diarrhea.

Take a stool sample to the vet to check for parasites/worms. giardia, coccidia

Stop giving PB and other treats.

Bland diet for a few days of boiled beef or chicken and white rice (overcooked and starchy) and add a good probiotic (not yogart, not strong enough) to sooth the intestinal tract.

But first get a sample checked by the vet in case he needs meds. (take the firmest stool you can find or thickest diarrhea. Watery diarrhea is very hard to test)

Maxx did have soft stools, off and on, while teething. It was never diarrhea. Maxx never ate goose poop but he has sampled cat, bunny and deer poop, YUCK! I also did my best to remove it when I caught him. The wood mulch I would worry about, it can cause an obstruction. If the diarrhea continues I would switch to boiled chicken and rice until poops are normal. If that does not help you really should call the vet. A probiotic may even be helpful.

I just made him some chicken and white rice. He ate a bit of that and then crawled over to cuddle with me. I'm planning on calling the vet in the morning if this continues. "Soft serve" doesn't bother me as much since he usually ends with that (sorry for that description LOL), but when it starts to be a little more runny, I start worrying. These aren't nearly as bad as what he suffered with the first day we had him home. Now that was pure liquid. This is in between "soupy" and "slushy" (sorry, I honestly don't know how else to describe this )

He enjoys taking a mouthful of the mulch and running towards the door. We have a lovely mulch pile near the door now. I try not to take him as far back as the geese go, but I can't control it (those little things run everywhere in the yard and driveway!). We've been trying to pinpoint what he could've possibly eaten that would start this, but goose poop, grass, dirt, or mulch are the only things I can think of/that sit around in the yard. If he had an obstruction, wouldn't he be more lethargic and throwing up as well? We just finished dinner and he was jumping all over like usual (still training with that one). He's also playing with his toys too, so he's definitely not deadly sick.

Update: Just took him outside and nothing. He felt well enough to chase down a scent, run around, try to take my shoe as I was shaking it out, and even rip a nice hole in my shirt. :P

Would it be that sudden of an onset like it was last night?

He would not be pooping with an obstruction. I mentioned that because you said he may have eaten mulch. It is hard to keep everything out of their mouth. I know I felt like all I did was dig disgusting things out of Maxx's mouth for months. Maxx did have the runs off and on while teething and yes, it came out of nowhere. Isn't puppyhood fun?!

    No not really LOL

His keyring came off of his collar yesterday (he was sitting on the vent, his tag got caught and fell down the vent, but the ring fell off onto the carpet). He comes by me chewing on something and then takes off. I chased him around and when I opened his mouth, I couldn't find it. I had a heart attack. Then I turned around and it was behind me on the floor.

I could write a novel with the things I've taken out of his mouth. Ugh the list goes on and on (as it will for many years to come).

I'm usually quick to get the mulch out. We bought the kind with the giant wood pieces so he couldn't swallow them easily. We're using it to cover a small area between our sidewalk and flowerbed. There were small rocks there that he'd go and pick up (which is more scary to me than a mulch stick). How many little pebbles did he end up swallowing? Beats me. Probably tons that I didn't catch. His nickname is "Hoover"

He's been acting fine since I last updated. He feels so fine, he's running around the living room at 100mph barking and biting me. And just 3 hours ago he was in my lap whining. Guess he's a great faker

I always tell people if they are squeamish, lack a sense of humor and lots of patience to stay away from Labs! They really are a lot of fun, it just takes time and training before you get that great dog you can take anywhere and do anything with. Someday the crazy becomes a distant memory and you will probably do it all over again. They really are THAT kind of dog!
