i would go with a primo pad or something along the lines of horse stall liners. thick and sturdy and "just fit" sizing (meaning you likely cut it to fit right in) so they can't chew it. some of them should stand up to most of the digging as well.

No bedding for mine as puppies. I have also wrapped the crate pan in a large towel so no free ends to chew, but only at night and they slept right next to me in their crates.

The end of the bed sticking up is PERFECT for encouraging chewing. Maybe take the divider out?

Whatever you do, put something under the pan to cushion the noise. Even a piece of cardboard cut so that no edges stick out.

The divider is covering (or shielding) the big part sticking up in the back - he can't get back there to chew it up.

The part in the front is what I'm worried about though. Would tying it down with those plastic ties help at all? (Even tying it down in the back)

You can always try but I wouldn't be surprised if he chews it now that he has started. I never had a problem with Maxx, he has had an ortho bed in his crate from day one but he was not a destructive puppy. His only destruction was paper items, tissues, toilet paper, paper towels, etc. I could not keep toilet paper on the holders until he was 2 years old. I would try every couple of months and it was like he had radar, within 10-15 minutes he would be racing through the house trailing toilet paper behind him. He can still steal a tissue from your hand before you even realize what has happened, little sneak. He likes to eat paper if he can get away with it. Fortunately he gives himself away pretty quickly when he has a prize! He has the best guilty face, he would never get away with being bad, he tells on himself very quickly. God truly took pity on me with Maxx, my last Lab was a holy terror his entire life!

No beds for us either. Not due to destruction, but Maverick gets super warm.

I was looking into these but I was considering waiting until he was a bit older. I may buy one after he destroys/trashes/etc the bed we just bought for him today. Are they comfortable for the dog?
Archie is often too hot with "cozy" bedding. He has a soft, squishy bed in our main living space, but he usually chooses the hardwood or tile floors instead. So yes, I think the Primo Pad is an improvement over just the tray, but doesn't make him hot.

LOL! Murph enjoys "trying" to take the toilet paper. We usually just keep the bathroom doors closed now so he can't get in. We caught him once with one of those little plastic things that helps to hold the toilet down. Ever since then, that door stays closed. He loves stealing/chewing blankets, pants, magazines, and shoes (I'll admit - I have a pair of crocs that I use for taking him outside since I don't care if they get dirty - he steals them at LEAST 5x a day and chews on them!).

Anyway, his bed did survive night one. He was also really tired since he went swimming, but I figured 1-2am was his prime time *if* he wanted to start chewing it up.

He usually likes laying on the carpet or the vents, but most of the time, he'll fall asleep under the coffee table (carpet). He's one of those dogs that can literally sleep anywhere. His favorite position is having his head hang off of the recliner arm while snoring. Don't know how that's comfortable, but as long as he isn't bothering me, I couldn't care less LOL

I may purchase a Primo pad - they're looking better and better. But first, I'd like him to use this bed for a while before I do that (since I don't want to waste $25 and I can't return it since he already slept on it)

I just used towels for the first couple months, they didn't chew them, and could easily push them out of they way if the wanted to. Bruce has a small crate pad now, but he normally wads it up and pushes it into a corner. I tried a crate bed with Sophie when she was about 8 months old, the third night she eviserated it, costing me $300 vet visit to make sure she hadn't injested any of it. So the rest of the time she was crated, no bed.

Just have to LOL as you are describing Sassy to a T. Down to the toilet paper obsession and the guilty face. Gotta love puppies!
