    New puppy, need some help

Well first things first, we welcomed another lab puppy into our home last saturday or should I say my husband welcomed this puppy into our home. He was on a job (he installs cable, internet etc.) and convinced them to let him take at least one of the 3 that were left. They were very thin, all crowded together, conditions we not good. He attempted to get the remaining 3 that were there but that didnt happen. Anyway, he brought home the one he thought needed a home the most and I am now a Mama to very scrawny, tiny little yellow boy. He is only about 8 pounds and you can see his ribs and little pelvic bones. Some of you have seen him on facebook, he is a little doll and my heart already belongs to him. He is the sweetest little thing. They told DH he was about 8 weeks and judging by his teeth id say thats probably right.

Yes my husband got in big trouble for this one but whats done is done and I am determined to make sure this little guy grows into a healthy, naughty, nipping, spawn of satan lab pup

Anyway i need some help. From day one he had diarrhea and was basically lethargic. I took him to the vet, he had a fever. Parvo test came back negative. Vet prescibed clavamox and metro. He also had ringworm on his left front paw, she told me to get some tinactin at the pharmacy. Within 24 hours he perked up, diarrhea got much better. I was feeding a bland diet of chicken and rice for a few days and i slowly started to add in Proplan focus puppy food. he was doing so well, eating 3 times a day, poop looked better everyday. he gained a pound. Temp normal. He also started acting normal, running around, nipping, barking. At this point he has been on just puppy food for 4 days, no chicken, no rice.

Meds were done Sunday. By yesterday he struggled to eat lunch and by dinner last night he really didnt want anything to do with his food. I boiled some chicken and he eat some of that but not much. His energy was back down, he slept most of the evening and played very little. I also noticed a slight nasal discharge. Temp was normal

This morning he refused his food completely, I tried the chicken and he ate very little. He went outside to poop and it started normal and ended with alot of diarrhea. He didnt want to play, just wanted to go back to sleep. I got dressed and sat at the vet until they opened this morning. Temp was normal. I described everything and she restarted the clavamox and gave me panacur and started him on a probiotic. I am also waiting for the results from the stool sample I brought in.

There has been no vomitting and he has been drinking plenty of water. Vet also did not want to start vaccinations until he was healthy.

I can deal with puppy diarrhea but the lethargy and lack of eating really bothers me. Any suggestions or thoughts? Does this sound like a parasite? Something else? Is there further testing that I should be asking for? Maybe blood work?

Poor little guy, thank goodness your husband has such a kind heart! Don't be too mad at him, his heart was in the right place.

I have never had a sick puppy, fortunately, so I am no help on figuring out what is going on. You have done everything I would do or suggest to do. Hopefully being back on meds will have him feeling better so you can get some food in him. That would be the most important thing at this point, in my opinion. I am so glad you have a vet with enough sense not to vaccinate this baby right now. Sending good thoughts he is soon the little terror we all know and love.

Oh boy. Bless your hearts for taking the little guy!

If he is tiny and unhealthy, the diarrhea probably affects him more than your typical healthy pup.

Poor baby probably has every kind of parasite under the sun. Are they checking him for heartworm? Is he anemic from fleas?

Neither heartworm or fleas is really an issue here. Preventatives arent even really given at all. I do think he full of parasites as well though

First of all, congratulations on your new addition! I hope you find out soon what is going on. Could be intestinal parasites. Or bacteria? Did the vets test for other infectious diseases except from parvo? That would also be my concern since the puppy wasn't vaccinated. Hope you find out soon what is going on.
